Trout Slam Update

TroutSlamJacobPattersonCutthroat

Been a while, too long, since I have given an update on our Nebraska Trout Slam.  I am sure most will remember, but in case you do not, follow the link to learn what a Nebraska Trout Slam is.  Briefly, it is catching one of each of the four species of trout found in Nebraska; brook, brown, cutthroat and rainbow.  Get that done, register your catches, and you will receive a certificate and hat pin. According to my latest ciphering, …

Cutthroat Stockings

DSCN5214

A couple of weeks ago I gave a “heads-up” that we were finally getting some cutthroat trout stocked in Nebraska waters again.  Many anglers have been looking hard for a cutthroat to complete their Trout Slam.  At that time, the first of those stockings was made in the White River southwest of Ft. Robinson.  We have stocked a few more thousand of those fish since then, here is the complete list: White River 1,000 Wood Reserve Ponds 600 Middle Fork …

TroutSlamPin

It has been way too long since I have given an update on our Trout Slam challenge.  Yes, there has been less interest since the challenge was introduced, and there is good reason for that–I will explain in just a minute.  However, folks are still out there catching trout, still making progress towards completing their Trout Slam! As of right now we have had 116 anglers enter 223 fish for the Trout Slam.  There have been a few mis-identifications or …

TroutSlamPin

It has been a few months since I gave an update on our Trout Slam recognition program .  With the weather cooling, one of the best times of year to catch our cold-water trout lies ahead of us.  So, let me see if I can pique your interest to get out there and explore our trout waters. Entries during the summer slowed to a trickle, and there were several weeks where I did not see any entries at all.  I am …

Fits and Starts

IMG_1496 (2)crop

If you have lived in the great state of Nebraska for any length of time, you know that spring is a frustrating time.  It comes in “fits and starts”.  I laugh at the wild swings in weather, and the wild swings in the mental health of those hoping for warm, sunny days.  Ha.  We are going to live with this schizophrenia for several weeks yet, might as well make the most of it! For example, in this past week I …
