Spring is in the air, and below the water

If you have read my blog for any time at all, you know I love to ice-fish.  As a hard-core ice angler, one of the saddest days of the year is the last day I walk off the ice for the season.  I just do not understand folks who refuse to ice fish, who sit around and wait all winter for open water.  GO FISH!  All the time! I also find it curious that so many folks judge the seasons …

Spring pan-sized rainbow trout stockings are underway in Nebraska already with the Two Rivers State Recreation Area Trout Lake near Waterloo, NE receiving fish! Many more water bodies around the state will be getting trout (like the one below) very soon! And, the stockings are just in time for some decent weather for wetting a line with your kids! I’ll be fishing later this week at the Two Rivers Trout Lake with my 16 year-old, high school sophomore Son Noah …

Fall Fishing Review

I love to hunt and trap in addition to fishing.  However, there is so little time and so much to do in Nebraska’s great outdoors, so it is natural that we develop our favorite activities.  If you have been reading my blog at all, you know mine is mostly fishing.  I love fish and fishing.  If I could design my fantasy calendar, it would be 3 months of spring turkey hunting, 3 months of fall fishing, and 6 months of …

Nebraska Fall Trout Stockings Have Begun

LINCOLN, Neb. – The fall stocking of catchable-size rainbow trout in Nebraska has begun. These 10-inch fish are being stocked in urban and park waters across the state to provide fishing opportunities throughout the winter. “These rainbow trout that are being stocked are relatively easy to catch and are in waters easily accessible to a lot of youth and beginning anglers,” said Daryl Bauer, fisheries outreach program manager with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “We encourage experienced anglers to …

Fall Trout Stocking 2013

It is October and that means it is time for our fall trout stockings.  We have already started stocking the 10-inch, catchable-size, rainbow trout in urban and parks waters across the state.  The schedule for those stockings is fluid depending on a lot of man-power and equipment logistics.  I can tell you what has already been stocked, but the schedule I am about to give for the stockings yet to occur is tentative; it is the best of our knowledge at …

Adventure Report, June 5, 2013

A couple of months ago I warned that I would be “out of the office” as much as possible.  Well, I have been; have enjoyed this spring immensely.  In fact I have enjoyed it so much that I have not given a fishing report recently.  Time to get caught up. . . . Lewis & Clark To start, I have to go back a couple weeks, back before the Memorial Day holiday.  Some of the Nebraska Walleye Association folks, http://www.nebraskawalleye.com/ …

Thank you, Nebraska TU!

I was thrilled to look at the front page of the Omaha World-Herald last Friday and see this story, http://www.omaha.com/article/20130531/NEWS/705319908/1016#volunteers-keep-nebraska-trout-stream-the-perfect-spot-to-spawn .  I would post a copy here, but I am sure the World-Herald would rather have you go to their website and read it.  Doooo it! While you are at it, make sure to check out Nebraska Trout Unlimited’s website: http://www.tu710.org/home/ They have a great series of photos of the work they are doing on the East Branch of Verdigre …

Spring Break Trout

With teenagers, you take advantage of any time that they may have available and want to venture outdoors. I did just that with the youngest member of our family yesterday. That would be our 15 year-old Creighton Prep High School Freshman Noah (Wagner). It’s spring break week at Prep and Noah indicated to me that he might like to get out and do a little fishin’ at the Two Rivers SRA Trout Lake near Waterloo and then go visit Grandma. …
