Fall Trout Stockings 2019, West

FallTroutStock1

Without a doubt, one of the most common questions I am hearing right now is “when are the trout going to be stocked?”  Seems like everyone is wondering about the fall stockings of catchable-size rainbows in urban and parks waters around the state. Those stockings occur about the same time every year, and that time is October, usually mid-October.  I do not have the full schedule yet for this fall’s stockings.  We are still working out some logistics and honestly, …

News Items, April 12, 2019

P4100068

Going to forego my usual “light-hearted” material on my Friday blog post this week.  Got a couple of small news items I would like to circulate: Papillion’s Lake Halleck among waters stocked with trout LINCOLN, Neb. – Rainbow trout continue to be stocked in Nebraska’s urban waters to enhance spring fishing opportunities. The Grove Trout Rearing Station earlier this week stocked 1,200 trout in Papillion’s Lake Halleck and 1,200 in Nebraska City’s Steinhart Park East Pond. The Calamus State Fish …

Updates, April 1, 2019

ElmCreek

Seriously, no “April Fool’s” in this blog post, although I have seen some good ones today.  No, I have some news updates and I ain’t fooling.  As is often the case, some of you may already be aware of these updates, but then I will get questions from folks and realize that not everyone “got the word”.  So, if there is anything I can do to let more folks know what is going on, well, I am going to do …

Spring Trout Stocking Update, March 28, 2019

DSCN4510

It seems that every other blog post I have done for the past month has been about spring trout stockings.  Might as well continue the trend: More rainbow trout stockings scheduled for March 30 LINCOLN, Neb. – Seven more lakes and ponds are scheduled to be stocked with rainbow trout March 30, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The Rock Creek State Fish Hatchery will stock 10-inch trout in the following locations, with quantities and approximate times (give …

Update on Spring Trout Stocking

DSCN4510

It is going to take a while to sort out what impacts all of this flooding is going to have on our recreation, wildlife, and parks areas.  Likewise, it is going to take some time for us to evaluate just what the impacts are going to be to many private and public fisheries.  Right now, I have heard a lot of things, some I know to be true, but some I am going to wait until we know more.  I …

Spring Trout Stockings. . . . Postponed Until Further Notice

SpottedRainbowCrop

I have been sitting on a schedule of spring trout stockings for at least a couple of weeks now. Gonna keep sitting on it. Obviously, with winter holding on stronger than ever right now, we will be waiting for warmer weather and some open water before those stockings will happen on parks and urban waters around the state.  I am not going to mention a schedule, because right now there ain’t one. That includes the spring opener for the Trout …

What Lurks Beneath, Nov. 2018, and an Update

Fall2018Saugeye

Our Nebraska Game & Parks Commission fisheries biologists are finishing up their fall fish sampling around the state.  I am starting to hear a few stories about what they sampled, will be getting data summaries and starting to put together next year’s Fishing Forecast in the coming weeks. Once again let me post a disclaimer before I show you the pictures:  When pointy-headed fisheries biologists sample fish populations they are NOT trying to capture the biggest fish in a population.  …

A Couple of Updates, Nov. 2, 2018

Cunningham Lake

I know what I am going to post will be of interest to only a couple of small areas of Nebraska, but if you are one of the anglers within those small areas, these news releases will be of interest to you.  I also realize that these news items have been making the rounds and many are already aware, but something else I have learned after several years of blogging is that the more you can “spread the word” the …
