Know What you Caught!!!!

DSCN1731

It is Monday.  That is really no big deal, sun comes up and sets on Monday just like it does any other day of the week.  However, this Monday I could tell there had been “stuff” blow up on the interwebs over the weekend.  Oh, it was “stuff” that I have blogged about before, more than once.  But, obviously it is “stuff” that might be new to some folks.  “Stuff” that others just plain do not care about. What am …

Front Page Pallid Sturgeon

PallidSturgeonNGPCMissouriRiverProgram

Walked by the break table on Monday.  The daily newspapers were lying there. Whoa, there was a pallid sturgeon on the front page of the Omaha World Herald! You gotta read the story! Research Underscores Toll of Human-Engineered Missouri River on Pallid Sturgeon I am proud to know the researchers mentioned in the article.  Proud of the work we are doing on the Missouri River.  I hope some day our “lower” Missouri River in Nebraska is more like a wild …

“Blinded Me With Science”–Missouri River Pallid Sturgeon

DSCN1731

I have not done a blog post on a fisheries science topic in a while.  Time to dust off the theme song, if you want, listen while you read, She Blinded Me with Science, Thomas Dolby. Got another link for you to follow.  This one about some research that has been done on pallid sturgeon in our stretch of the Missouri River.  I found an excellent article in the Nebraska City News Press.  No, I am not going to copy …

Notable Fish

20191016_AnglerPallid2

Some Loup River anglers caught a notable fish last month. . . . No, it was not a catfish as big as a bus.  It was a pallid sturgeon, a federally-listed endangered species.  Pallid sturgeon are similar to shovelnose sturgeon, but larger and much rarer.  Nebraska Game & Parks Commission research crews spend a lot of time monitoring pallid sturgeon in the Missouri and lower Platte rivers in Nebraska, but none have ever been documented in the Loup River. That …

2018 Pallid Sturgeon Broodstock Collection

PallidSturgeon2018

As I have said several times already this spring, it is a busy time for Nebraska fisheries workers.  From the time the ice is gone, field work is in full swing.  Once again this year that included our efforts to collect pallid sturgeon brood fish from the Missouri River.  Here is the annual newsletter on those efforts. . . . Once again, if you want to see a “cleaner” version of that report, here is the .pdf, 2018 Broodstock Newsletter_draft4 . You …

Sturgeon Identification

DSCN1731

I have seen some reports already this early spring of sturgeon being caught, mostly from Nebraska’s Missouri River.  I am confident a lot of the anglers catching those fish, especially the old “river rats” are very aware of what they are catching and their sturgeon identification.  On the other hand, I realize there are new folks learning about new fishing opportunities all the time, and sometimes I worry they may not know what they are catching. There are three species …

I have tried a few times this spring to give you an idea of how busy Nebraska fisheries workers are at this time of year.  One of the largest efforts we have every spring is the collection of endangered pallid sturgeon from the Missouri River.  The goal of that effort is to collect reproductive pallid sturgeon adults, broodstock, that then can be used to produce small pallid sturgeon for re-introduction/re-stocking.  Here, just read this year’s newsletter for details: For a …
