Panfish System on Ice

IMG_0794

Several years ago I posted a blog about what I consider to be the basic “kid’s fishing system”.  Unfortunately, I cannot link back to that old blog post, going to have to dust it off and just plain run it again some time.  Anywho, it was simple, rods, reels, small floats, small jig-heads, waxworms (yes, waxworms are great bait year around, not just on ice).  It is a system that almost never fails for catching some panfish, sunfish, bluegills in …

Good Advice

P1020014

I posted one of these videos in my blog a couple of weeks ago, the same cast of characters talked about panfish regulations in that video.  This one is from last year, but it is just as good!  It is also a little shorter, but again, worth every minute! We live in an age when there is more information, more advice, available than ever before.  Believe me, I am part of it.  And, believe me, a lot of it is …

At Least I Can Talk Ice-Fishing

DSCN7191

Due to the lack of safe ice, my season certainly has been less than what I hoped for so far.  However, that is NOT going to keep me from talking about it! Yes, I know what the forecast says.  I am leaving early to make sure I am there.  This classroom session can be a “go” no matter what; I am planning on it! No, there will be no on-ice clinic on Sunday.  Sorry. Fort Kearny ice-fishing event canceled LINCOLN, …

What They Said

BLGReleaseCrop

There is a video that has been making the rounds on the interwebs; it is about a subject I have already been on my “soap box” about once this winter.  In fact, some of you get tired of my pointy-headed ramblings on the subject; some have even called me some kind of fascist about it.  So, don’t listen to me, take a few minutes and listen to some of the best ice sticks in the world and see what they …

First Day Fish

P1010004

With the holidays and everything, I skipped a blog post this week.  Kinda hard to blog from a bucket on the ice deep in the Nebraska sandhills. Sue me. Unfortunately, I am back in the office now, let me give a quick adventure report from the past few days. My New Year’s Day and the calendar New Year’s Day corresponded this year.  Unfortunately, the first fish I could catch through the ice this year, the beginning of my “New Year”, …

Ice Fishing Pet Peeves

DSCN4479

My biggest pet peeve about ice fishing is not having safe ice! That is where I have been so far this winter.  I still have faith that we will spend at least some time fishing through holes this winter, and when we do, I am betting you can relate to one or more of these, Top 30 Ice Fishing Pet Peeves. Some of those are so true, some not so much, some funny, some not at all.  Unfortunately, I definitely …

Let’s Get Jiggy With It!

WalleyeGrin

Stinkin’ weather. Yes, I am getting to the point that I am becoming grumpy.  No, it is not because of how long the winter has become, it is because it hasn’t been cold enough for me to be on the ice yet!!!!   GGGGGrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!! So, I have been entertaining myself with as many ice-fishing videos as I can find.  This one is from a couple years ago, but it is very entertaining and there is a thing or two you might …

Channel Cats Through the Ice

IMG_1496 (2)crop

My lighthearted blog post last Friday was about catching largemouth bass through the ice.  Some of  us “northern” boys really know how that is done, and in fact the bite for largemouth bass through the ice can at times be very good and is a lot of fun. I know our ice conditions in some parts of Nebraska are very much “iffy” right now, and let’s just say if you are getting on the ice, you better be very careful …
