Ah, Ice!

IMG_0620

We are nearing the middle of January, and I just realized I have not blogged about any of my ice-fishing adventures, yet. . . . Hmm, let me think, I have been on the ice nearing a dozen times now, have been on waters from the central and west-central parts of the state to the southeast.  I will not tell you that my partners and I have dried off any exceptional fish so far, and perhaps that is why I …

Just this morning I had a gentleman ask me questions about getting started ice-fishing.  I had an easy answer for him!  Attend one of our Discover Ice Fishing Clinics! The first of those for this winter is scheduled for this coming Saturday, Jan. 14, at Lake Wanahoo just north of the town of Wahoo.  We will “set up shop” there at the main boat ramp on the west side of the reservoir and will be there from 1:00 p.m. to …

Plastics on Ice

DSCN6313

The equipment advances on the ice-fishing front in the past decade or two have literally been mind-boggling.  There is so much modern ice-fishing equipment available now that makes it a lot easier to ice-fish and makes us a lot more effective catching fish through the ice.  It all works, they are all different tools for different jobs, the key is using the right tools. A variety of small jigs have been the standard for catching panfish through the ice for …

Elwood ice fishermen should use caution during pumping

NGPC Latest News logo

LINCOLN — The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District has resumed pumping operations into Elwood Reservoir as part of efforts to utilize excess flows in the Platte River for groundwater recharge in and adjacent to Central’s irrigation service area. Central reminds people who use the lake for winter recreation that ice conditions can be affected by rising water levels as more water is pumped into the lake. Extreme caution should be used, particularly by ice fishermen venturing onto the …

A Trip to the Dark Side

JeffKurrusCrappie

There is a very interesting story in this month’s issue of NEBRASKAland.  It is a story that Jeff Kurrus wrote.  Let me tell you a little bit about Jeff. . . . Jeff is a Tennessee boy, hard-core fisherman, but he had a whole new world to experience once he moved to Nebraska.  I had done some “stuff” over the phone with Jeff before he moved here and started working for NEBRASKAland.  Naturally, as soon as he got here, he …

Take Care of your Auger, and Your Auger Will Take Care of You!

Isom Bauer 002

Even the most hard core of us ice-anglers are now resigned to the fact that it is going to be a few months until we are on the ice again.  Yes, I go through a period of depression every year when the ice melts.  In short order, I pick up the open-water rods and reels and “get back on the horse”, but I still am counting the days until we again have ice! So, I know many of you reading …

Ode to the Season Past

DSCN7169

My ice fishing season ended in literally a week this year; we were on 13+ inches of hard ice, and a week later it was not safe.  It was much too short.  My son and I were left with a feeling of unfulfillment–we needed just one more trip, just one more big fish.  I suppose you could say we have that feeling at the end of every ice season, but we felt it even more this year. I have not …

I suppose most of you have no idea about this, but the world ice-fishing championship is being held in the Ukraine even as I type!  How in the world do I know that?  Well, I know because we have one of our own, a Nebraska angler, on the USA team, Rob Greer!  Rob stopped by my office early last week, he was getting some errands done before he and the rest of the USA team headed overseas.  I can tell you …
