Stocking Hybrid Sunfish

Hybrids15a

I got out of the office one day last week to assist with some fish stockings.  Here was the news release from a couple weeks ago: Hybrid bluegill to be stocked in urban lakes LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska families fishing urban ponds and lakes will have additional angling opportunities as the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is stocking hybrid bluegill in 11 bodies of water. In total, 8,500 fish – a bluegill/green sunfish cross – will be stocked in May …

Yeah, So It’s Hot?

IMG_1669

I gotta admit, this June heat wave has dampened my enthusiasm to do anything but sit someplace cool.  But, then there is the realization that it is still just June and there is a long summer ahead of us–better enjoy it!  So, even in the middle of the day, right at the worst of the heat and humidity, my kids and I went fishing.  We kept it basic, just dipped and dabbled for some panfish, but the fish were willing …

As soon as we got there and tackled up, we spotted a bunch of bluegills and small largemouth bass cruising the shorelines.  That is a very common sight on Nebraska pits and ponds this …

State Record Summary, 2012

One of my favorite things I get to do in my present position here at the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission is keep track of our state record fish.  I will periodically give updates and show a few pictures here on my blog; at this time let me summarize the state record activity for 2012. We had 14 fish certified as state records in 2012.  We recognize state record fish in four categories, hook & line (or rod & reel), …
