Whether it’s hunting, ice fishing, cross country skiing, sledding or snowshoeing, the state has great outdoor opportunities. Hypothermia is a low body temperature most often caused by exposure to cold weather or immersion in a cold body of water. Left untreated, hypothermia can lead to …

Deer Hunting Summed Up in Unique Way

I am currently in the field enjoying spending quality time with family and friends during Nebraska’s 2015 firearm deer hunting season (despite some of our ever-changing Nebraska weather conditions, HA!). We are seeing improved numbers of white-tailed deer on our farm and the adjacent farms that we hunt in southeastern Nebraska and had success on the opening weekend. My 18 year-old son Noah, a high school senior, who has enjoyed playing football at Omaha’s Creighton Prep High School, sums up his firearm deer hunting experience in …

Hunters: Do You Know the Pheasant’s Itinerary?

Ring-necked pheasants are really a lot like us humans. They live their lives on a fairly predictable, routine basis. When a pheasant hunter learns to understand that schedule and interrupt the pattern, he or she will be on the path to having increased opportunities for success. Pheasants begin their day waking at roost sites, usually in areas of short to intermediate height grass or weeds where they have spent the night. At first light, they head for roadsides or other areas …

Prospects Look Good for Pheasant Season

NGPC Latest News logo

LINCOLN – Upland game hunters across Nebraska will have improved prospects during this year’s pheasant season, which opens Oct. 31. Pheasant numbers are 55 percent higher than last year. Nebraska’s weather has been kind to the state’s upland game this year. The state has experienced relatively mild winters recently, which has aided over-winter survival of pheasants. The more pheasants – particularly hens – that survive the winter, the larger the breeding stock is for the breeding season. The favorable spring …

Twelve Tips for Taking Kids Pheasant Hunting

One of the most rewarding experiences for me has been making time to take my own kids out hunting. I have worked hard to pass along that great Nebraska hunting heritage and to instill in them an interest in hunting with an appreciation for nature. Consequently, today all of them enjoy various hunts here in the Cornhusker State. Having four kids ages 27, 23, 21 and 18, I know what it is like to usher in, nurture and train young hunters. …

Hunting experience goes beyond the harvesting

The air is crisp and cold. Hardwood trees stand motionless and silent — faint brush strokes against the slowly lightening predawn sky. Small sounds begin to carve the creek bottom. A raucous calamity of crows can be heard in the distance. An assertive blue jay appears on a limb. Two fox squirrels squabble amid the leaves on the woodland floor. In the grass beyond the trees, a rooster pheasant cackles; greeting the first full rays of the sun. Suddenly, and …
