What Do You See?

Some of you are going to wonder about me when you read this blog post.  A few more of you will dismiss it because you will think it has nothing to do with fishing.  It does, I promise.  Dare you to keep reading. . . Recently, I spent some time with my daughter and son-in-law watching birds or “birding”.  Oh sure we did it with some chuckles and jokes along the way, but honestly we had a lot of fun.  …

Foreshadowing

P3220092

Yes, I have been spending a lot of time with turkeys this spring, literal, feathered turkeys.  I do every spring. Have not had a chance to blog about it yet.  There have been other items that have been a higher priority and have warranted previous blog posts.  Today it is time to tell a story. . . . If you have read my thoughts on spring turkey hunting before, you know that I consider the key to success to be …

Preseason Checklist for Hunters

We are in the “dog days” of summer. In fact, it was so hot in Nebraska the other day I saw a coyote chasing a rabbit and they both were walking! Just kidding. On the serious side of things, wildflowers are in bloom, ears of sweet corn are being harvested and elderberries will soon be ripe. The start of school is also just around the corner. Boating, swimming, tubing and fishing are being widely enjoyed now on the hot weekends. …

Why Yes, I do speak Turkese

IMG_0892

I probably have too much clutter on my dresser.  One thing you can find in the junk and trinkets piled there is my very first turkey call. An instrument of torture. I did not start hunting turkeys until I was in college.  Still, that was a few days ago.  In preparation for that inaugural spring turkey hunt, my cousin Robin gave me my first turkey call.  As I recall it was a Christmas present.  It was a mouth diaphragm call, …

I Am Hunter

TurkeySunrise

I want to blog one more time about our spring turkey season.  Consider this to be my epilogue blog.  Ha. My kids and I had a great turkey season this spring.  I know I say that every spring, but I especially felt that way this spring.  Sure, we all punched tags with 2-year old, mature Toms, and believe me success is a big part of it, but I just felt like I got even more enjoyment out of this spring’s …

Shhhhhh!

DSCN6535

Please allow me to interrupt my usual subject material here on my blog. . . . It is turkey season and my mind can only concentrate on one thing at a time.  Right now it bounces back and forth between spring turkey hunting, mushroom picking and fishing. Every morning I hear the birds singing, they may not be turkeys and I may be in the middle of town, but as soon as I hear them, my ears are straining to …

5 Things Every Turkey Hunter Should Have

I have been hunting turkeys for over 30 springs now.  That may or may not mean that I have learned anything about spring turkey hunting.  You will have to decide that.  I do know that I have some ideas about what I would consider to be critical equipment, “must haves”, for every spring turkey hunter.  Let me show you a picture of my Tom from last year, four of those 5 important pieces of equipment are included in this picture. …

Grandmaster of Turkey Hunting on Great Outdoor Radio Show

On the opening morning of Nebraska’s popular Spring Shotgun Wild Turkey Hunting Season, I bring (who I believe to be) the Grandmaster of Wild Turkey Hunting to you on my one-of-a-kind Great Outdoor Radio Show presented by Mahoney State Park. Who is the Grandmaster of  Turkey Hunting? It’s this man! None other than legendary turkey hunter, veteran turkey call maker (www.turpincalls.com) and humorist Dick Turpin of Lincoln, NE! Dick joins me along with his sidekick Dudley Moore on the show …
