All Turkeys, All the Time

It is spring and the turkeys are gobbling.  That is all that is on my mind, all the time. . . and, I mean ALL the time. I found that picture on the internet someplace.  Do not know if it is respectful of the toms or disrespectful?  Would love to have one in the “man cave” though! Have a great weekend everyone, you know where I will be!

Dizzy Turkey

It is spring and love is in the air for many of Nebraska’s creatures.  I have been in the field helping collect walleye eggs for our walleye stockings the past couple of weeks (Easter Egg Hunt), so I know it is time for the walleyes to be doing their “thing”.  I am also a bona fide spring turkey hunting addict and I am very aware that our turkeys are well into their mating season too–the toms are strutting!  In the …

Resourceful

Ice anglers are a resourceful bunch.  There are way more and way better commercially-made products on the market now than ever before, but most of us still have to have at least some homemade “stuff” in our ice sleds.  Recently I saw this video on the internet and laughed out loud, this is taking it to a whole ‘nother level! The sound of an ice auger running is one of my favorite sounds! There is even a FaceBook page, Ice …

New Ice-Fishing Technique

I have a new ice-fishing technique I want to try out this winter.  It is a European technique. . . . Looks a little cold, and probably hard on the hands.  Oops, I just remembered hand-fishing is not allowed in Nebraska.  Oh well. Have a great weekend everyone!  “I wanna ice-fish, baby”!

If That Trophy Could Talk. . . .

Tomorrow is a holiday for many Nebraskans–the opening of rifle deer season!  I love the variety of hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities that Nebraska offers, including some big game hunting, but not a lot.  However, I have done enough to know why tomorrow is such a big day, and I know there will be a lot of folks who have a hard time sleeping tonight.  We have some cold weather, the rut is in full swing, there will be some …

What Does the Buck Say?

A year or so ago there was this song/music video that enjoyed some popularity.  It was something about “What Does the Fox Say?” I guess I am getting old and apparently ain’t too hip on my pop culture, because I did not get it. I found something similar on the internet, a spoof, “What Does the Buck Say?”  I can relate to it a little more. Now, before someone complains, I am not condoning the unsafe practices that might be …

Don’t Forget Your Duck Call

Duck seasons are in full swing in much of Nebraska right now and where they are not open, they soon will be.  From the predictions I have heard, it should be a great season. I enjoy the variety of fishing AND hunting opportunities we have in Nebraska, I like to dabble (pardon the pun) in all of them, but I have to admit to you that I am not a big waterfowl hunter.  I own exactly 13 duck decoys, has to …

Mean Fish

You know I am fascinated by the predator/prey dynamics that happen below the surface of our waters. I also have a streak of orneriness that runs in my blood. I think I could have a lot of fun with this: Have a great weekend everyone.  Keep an eye out for “land sharks”.

It’s the Weekend, GO FISH!

I know we have had a lot of rain recently.  In fact we have had so much rain in some places that our fishing waters are running a little high right now.  Anytime the water is high, fish are likely to move right up into newly flooded areas, right to the water’s edge. . . . In some cases right up into the parking lot. One of the best times of year is upon us, you can hunt or fish right …

A Couple of Odds & Ends for the Weekend

I have a couple of somewhat random things to share with you before I head out the door for the weekend. First of all, you have probably heard me say before that understanding predator/prey dynamics is KEY to finding and catching fish.  That is doubly important for anglers because we not only have to find our quarry, we also have to make them bite!  So, here is a short video that I found.  I never get tired of watching big …
