Happy Independence Day!

I do not know what your family traditions are for the 4th of July holiday, but I know this cartoon is very appropriate for ours: I have to tell you that the 4th of July has probably always been my favorite holiday.  Yes, I suppose that is due at least in part to all the fireworks, but a couple of years ago when it was very dry and the fire hazard was very high we did no fireworks and still …

Reel ‘Em In Roadtrip with Lynn Berggren

Ron Kratzer and I fished Sherman Dam Monday evening. Weather was hot with no wind which made fishing tough. Ronnie likes to troll so we drug Shad Rap’s and spinners with leeches along the west side in 14-20 FOW. One crappie and one small walleye was all we could produce. Boats in the area were struggling also as we were,  so no other fish caught in the area. Tim Shuckman, Dan Scofield and I fished Calamus Wednesday evening. Weather was …

Robinson Reports: Over the Hump

It finally seems that the cold wintery weather has disappeared. Since we’re well into a late spring, my biggest fear is that it’ll turn into a hot summer in a very short amount of time, which would leave some windows open for a short time to catch specific fish at specific times. Right now, we’re taking what we can get. Water temps across the central Nebraska region have slowly been rising, only to be pushed back down at times by …

Throwback Thursday: Taking the Kids Fishing

I will always tell you that I do not force what I do (as an avid outdoor enthusiast or as a conservation professional) on my kids but I have introduced them, continued to take them, and to this day, bug them to death about going with me (The Old Man) to enjoy time in Nebraska’s great outdoors. I especially bug them to go fishing and have been successful over the years! All of my kids love to wet lines and catch …

Banking on the Refuge

In Nebraska, the wind is going to blow – especially in wide-open locales like the lakes at the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. I’ve gotten used to it, but some days I just don’t feel like trying to keep a boat straight. But no worries. The most productive adjustment I have made when fishing for species like largemouth bass and northern pike is one I’ve been using since childhood – bank fishing. Bank fishing is especially productive at a place like …
