Carp-O-Rama, Maloney

MaloneyCarp2015

Just a reminder that this coming Saturday, July 16, is our “Carp-O-Rama” event at Lake Maloney south of North Platte. I have said it before, will say it again now.  We basically show up at these events and have fun.  Bring the kids and have fun with us!  If you do not have tackle, do not worry, we got that, and the Nebraska Fish & Game Association folks will have the bait.  We will offer some expertise too if you …

Milk Fish? Silver Carp?

Hypophthalmichthys_molitrix_Hungary

I know next to nothing about Milk Fish.  They are a marine species, live in the Pacific Ocean, tropical waters.  Apparently, they feed on very small food items, plankton, algae, larvae and eggs, maybe some bugs.  Milk Fish have had the reputation of being impossible to catch on hook & line because of their feeding habits.  Their prey is so small that it is hard to imitate.  But, then I watched this video, and it got me to thinking. . . …

Prairie Queen, Below the Surface

PrairieQueenAerial

Anglers, if you have not seen it already, you MUST check out the July 2016 issue of NEBRASKAland.  Of course, as always, this issue is packed with lots of great information and great photography.  But, specifically what I want to call your attention to is a story by Jeff Kurrus on pages 58-63.  On those pages Jeff chronicles, mostly using photographs, the construction of Prairie Queen Reservoir near Omaha.  Seeing the Change at Prairie Queen consists of a number of …

Dog Days

DSCN6897

We are in the middle of the summer and have already had some stretches of hot weather in Nebraska.  No doubt there is more of that in the forecast.  Believe me, I am not in a hurry to get out and fish hard during the heat and humidity, especially during the middle of the day.  But, I ain’t about to quit fishing either.  So, what is an angler to do?  How can we scratch some fish even during these “dog …

Spittin’ Image

I will never tell you that fish are smart.  The biggest trophy you have ever caught in Nebraska has a brain about the size as the end of your finger.  I am afraid those of you who arrive home and announce that the fish “out-smarted” you after a catch-less day are setting the bar very low for yourself.  Yes, guys, I am talking to you. However, I will tell you that all wild critters have an incredible instinct to survive and …

Carp Week

MaloneyCarp2015

I know a couple of things in the “Carp World” this week that I want to mention.  First of course is our annual “Carp-O-Rama” event at Branched Oak Reservoir this coming Saturday.  As a fisheries biologist I will tell you that invasive Carp species, including the Common Carp that have been here for over a hundred years, are a scourge and if I could snap my fingers and make ’em all go away, I would.  Fisheries biologists will forever be managing …

Roll Tape

NebraskaOutdoorsSpringBassPanfish

My buddies here at the Game & Parks Commission, Jeff Rawlinson and Aaron Hershberger have been taping some “how to” videos or “V blogs” or whatever you want to call them.  You can find them on YouTube under the title of “Nebraska Outdoors“. Aaron invited me over last week to talk fishing and they just got that video posted up today.  Might as well share it here on my blog too! Have a great weekend everyone.  Fish are biting, get …

2016 Family Fishing Events

12993526_583276335164285_4828130686096448366_n

I taught a “basic fishing” class last Thursday evening.  That class was planned to be in a classroom and I am afraid the participants had to listen to me ramble about fishing for a couple of hours.  I hope I did not bore them to tears.  One thing I mentioned to them that I want to “hit” again today is our Family Fishing events.  Yes, some of these events have already been held this late spring/early summer, but there is …

Fishing 101

DSCN6547

Got a basic fishing workshop coming up this week.  It will be held at the Outdoor Education Center on Superior Street here in Lincoln.  The workshop will be free, but space is available, the folks at the education center ask that you REGISTER. The workshop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Now, I could talk for two days on “Basic Fishing”, so I know now there will not be enough time to cover everything.  However, what I try to …

Spring Crappies

DSCN5310

There is no doubt that the fish species that can send the largest masses of anglers to the banks during the spring outbreak of fishing fever would be crappies.  Everyone loves to sit on a shoreline on a warm afternoon and experience a good crappie bite.  On the other hand, with schizophrenic weather changes, I can think of no other species of fish that can be more frustrating than spring crappies.  Consistently successful anglers are always adapting and adjusting.  What …
