Holly Folly

I guess it is “Elf on a Shelf” season.  Somehow I missed out on that Christmas tradition in my upbringing.  I do not know where I went wrong. . . . I thought it was all about clever rhymes.  Like this one from northern Nebraska today: Or, maybe a little bit farther north: Now before one of you complains that my blog today is nothing but a bunch of stupid memes, it is about fish!  Seriously.  Big toothies, what else? …

A Little ‘Stitious?

Are you lucky?  Do you believe in “luck”? I have started many fishing seminars by stating that there is no such thing as “luck”.  Those anglers who seem to always catch fish are not “lucky”.  They know what they are doing. If you wish, “luck” has been defined as the residue of hard work, or where preparation meets opportunity.  I suppose those definitions of “luck” could apply to fishing. What about things that bring good luck?  Lucky charms?  What about …

Boots are Full!

bx180_28a5_9

I spend a lot of time in waders.  So far, I am a boatless angler.  I discovered a long time ago that by putting on a pair of waders and getting even a few feet off shore I could catch more fish.  In addition, in my “day job” as a fisheries biologist, waders are part of the standard uniform when doing field work.  Believe me, I have poked holes in waders in pretty much every way possible.  After a year …

The Sodapop Gang

DSCN6208

I would tell you that I have never been in trouble with the law, but . . . . There was that time I was pulled over for knocking off a convenience store.  Had three nephews and my son in the pickup at the time.  None of them were even old enough to drive. . . . That story begins as a fish story.  We had spent the day cherry-picking, hopping from spot to spot, picking off active fish, trout …

Gotta Get One of These!

TwoWalleyes

I have been watching the Head to Head Fishing Pro Walleye Series on Lake McConaughy all week.  Two techniques have accounted for most fish.  Both techniques are somewhat uniquely Nebraskan.  In fact it could be argued that they have been perfected if not developed in Nebraska.  Trolling has been one of the winning techniques, including trolling leadcore with big, heavy spinnerbaits–definitely a Nebraska technique.  The other winning presentation has been vertical jigging with slab spoons, “slabbing”–another technique more popular in …

Sharpen ‘Em!

MuskieMouthClose1

If I miss a fish, first thing I do is look at the hook.  At times the size may need to be adjusted, but always you have to make sure it is sharp! I found this on the interwebs.  It will help you get it right! https://www.instagram.com/p/CAYg-rOAJm-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link You can tell when I have been sharpening hooks, my thumbs and thumbnails look like pin cushions. Have a great weekend!  FISH ON!

Dad Songs

DSCN4666

You have heard of “dad jokes”; in fact you probably have a few. I was reviewing some tunes the other day and realized I also have a repertoire of “dad songs”.  You know what I am talking about.  Your kids roll their eyes too. On long road trips I would occasionally pop the ole cassette tape in and play this one:  (It was a cassette, not an 8-track).  (Oh yes, I am serious, I have a cassette with this song …

Boat Ramp Blocked!

MacBoatRampCrop2

Heard about some boat ramp problems they had over on the Suez Canal this week.  Sounds like they finally got that taken care of. I guess it is getting to be boat ramp season!  Supposed to be a nice weekend this weekend, never know what you might see: I have discovered that there are whole channels on YouTube with boat ramp comedy!  The one above was in Miami, so no, probably no one you know on there.  The funniest part …

Crazy, So What?

IceGuides

It is springtime in Nebraska.  If you are serious about fishing, you are going to be on the water during some abhorrent weather conditions.  Otherwise, well, otherwise you ain’t fishing enough: Of course, if you are on the water like you should be, then folks think you are crazy: I had a day like that already this spring: The best part about it?  No one else fishing! However, this gentleman came swimming by, literally right by my feet: He thought …
