Fall Fishing

P8210099

One of the challenges of blogging about the outdoors, about hunting and fishing, is every year the same seasons roll around.  The same topics are timely at the same times, year after year, after year.  I am a huge fan of fall fishing and fish open water harder in the fall than I do any other time.  I have blogged about that many times.  Going to again. The calendar says we are moving into late October, but let me tell …

Fall Review 2020

RedearXbluegillhybridOct2020

Getting towards the end of the year and some folks like to look back, review what kind of year it has been.  If you are an angler, you like to do that and remember the fish you caught. I could do that, but a year is such a long period, and I fish really hard in the fall.  So my review is not going to be all of 2020; just the past few months–the best open-water fishing of the year. …

Passing Time

PB270018

I fish twelve months out of every year; open-water or on ice I will be fishing.  However, when we get this late into the fall/early winter I am kind of passing time waiting for ice.  Once the calendar turns to December, ice cannot come soon enough. I am still fishing open water while I am waiting, but the water is darned cold now.  That makes things challenging.  Fortunately, trout are cold-water fish, and fortunately, we have some great trout fishing …

Fall Review 2019

PA240024

I will fish every month, every year, somewhere in Nebraska for some species of fish.  However, I will confess that there are certain times of the year when I am a lot more serious about my fishing. You might be surprised to know that spring is not my favorite time to be on the water.  There are a lot better times when the weather is more consistent, the fish are less interested in reproduction and more interested in feeding, and …

On Stand

SunsetSilo

A long, long time ago, I used to do some bow-hunting.  Actually, I started shooting a bow before I ever went to school, kindergarten that is.  Back in those days, bows did not have wheels and wires, and arrows had cedar shafts.  The only thing I ever knew was a Bear recurve, and the arrows my Dad manufactured. Along about grad. school, I really got into fishing in the fall.  Oh, it is not that I do not love to …

Labor Day Weekend

IMG_1313

Well, I guess we have come to the official unofficial end of summer, Labor Day weekend.  I typically do not have a holiday-related blog post for Labor Day, but this might apply to your “labor”: That pie chart may be closer to the truth than many of us want to admit.  The problem is, the sliver where it says actual work–at that time I am probably on the phone or e-mail, you guessed it, talking about fishing!  Or, I am …

Fall in Review, 2018

PA220029

I have already suggested some things to do during this “‘tweener time” while we wait for safe ice.  Naturally, one thing we like to do as anglers is reminisce about past trips, past successes, big ones caught.  That reminiscing could include years past or just the current year, but for me, this time of year, I like to look back over the fall fishing that I just finished. I fish hard in the fall, as much as possible.  It is …

Pretty Time of Year, Pretty Fish Too!

DSCN5092

I was wondering what to blog about today, it’s Friday and you know I try to keep things “light” for the weekend. Stepped outside for a bit over the lunch hour; since our mini-ice age earlier this week, the weather has been gorgeous and many of our trees are at their fall-color peak right now. And then it hit me:  Just post some of my favorite, pretty, fall-fishing pictures. Nebraska is a great place for sunrises and sunsets, and I …

Go Slow, Go Big, or Go Home

FlatRapCrop

Does not matter what part of Nebraska you live in, the past couple of weeks have been wet and they have been cold.  Some parts of our state have already seen significant snow.  To say we are in the middle of fall would be an understatement because the weather has been a whole lot like late fall/early winter.  If you are one of the few who has been spending some time on the water, you know the water temps. have …

Fall is On

P8230001

Nebraska is a place where we experience all four seasons, winter, spring, summer and fall.  Sometimes we experience two or more of those seasons within a 24-hour period. Most of the time the transition between seasons is much more gradual, much more subtle.  If you only fish a few times a year, your transition between seasons may be abrupt–spring on one trip, summer the next.  But, if you spend a lot of time on the water, if you pay close …
