TV Ice Fishing

20170208_181111

A couple of days ago I told you that last week was a busy week, and I told you about one of the things that made it busy–the MidWest Fish & Widlife Conference.  During that conference I took a break to do an orientation session with a couple of our new commissioners here at the Game & Parks Commission, and then I headed out of town to help with another little project. . . . I have referred to some …

It Is a Fish Eat Frog World!

DSCN4383

Recently I got “tagged” on FaceBook with a picture of a channel catfish that had been caught through the ice. The fish was a little over 5 pounds, a very respectable channel cat, especially through an ice hole, but the big surprise came at the cleaning table when the stomach contents were examined: Look close, it has been digested a bit, but laying just in front of the catfish’s head is a bullfrog that came out of that fish’s stomach! …

What Lurks Beneath?

imag1007

I have some piles of data on my messy desk right now; I am putting stuff together for the 2017 Fishing Forecast.  It should be done and available near the first of the year, just like it is every year.  I will be sure to get the word out when it is ready. . . . Until then, I know that no matter how much I say or what data I show, nothing beats some pictures!  So, to tease you …

Catfish Stockings

DSCN6705

I like to give a little update now and then about some of the fisheries management activities going on around Nebraska.  Your pointy-headed fisheries biologists, researchers, and fish production workers never rest. In late summer we do a bunch of our Channel Catfish stocking around the state.  Channel Catfish are very popular with Nebraska anglers and can be found in waters throughout the state.  Those Catfish have no problem reproducing in a variety of waters, but there are a lot of …

You may recall from a recent blog post by Daryl Bauer that bonus-sized, 4-pound channel catfish were just stocked in a couple locations around our area for your summer fishing. Bonus Fish–Details!

A couple of days ago I teased you with an opportunity that will be available to catch some quality-size channel catfish from a select few bodies of urban and parks waters, Bonus Fish.  So, to understand what I am referring to in this blog post, why and how there is this opportunity right now, and why it is so limited, you must go back and read that blog post too.  Take a couple of minutes, go back and read it, …

Bonus Fish

We, the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, will stock somewhere around 290,000 channel catfish into nearly 200 different waterbodies in the state this year.  Most of those fish will be around 9-10 inches long when stocked.  Included in the waters that will be stocked with those 290-some thousand channel cats will be many of the state’s relatively small, park, urban, and community lakes and ponds.  The fish stocked in those waters will be relatively easy to catch and located near a …

Weird

If you spend time in the outdoors, on the water, in the field, or in the “woods”, you have to marvel at the variety you can experience in nature.  Sure, there are patterns, tendencies, habits, cycles, but if you spend anytime at all “out there” you will encounter something from time to time that you have never seen or experienced before.  And that is one thing that keeps us going back, again and again. With that in mind, let me share …

A Combo of Tournaments

A few weeks ago I told you about the 2014 High School Bass Fishing Championship held at Merritt Reservoir.  I want to return to that event in this blog post because there was something else about that day that I think was really special. When the state high school bass championship was held at Merritt this year, there was also a Nebraska Walleye Association tournament at the same time.  As a matter of fact the NWA folks were kind enough …
