Halt Eastern Redcedar Invasion

Opportunities coming to halt eastern redcedar invasion One of the greatest threats to Nebraska livestock production comes in an unassuming package. Eastern redcedar (juniperus virginiana), with its fragrant foliage and purplish “berries,” doesn’t look like a threat. But science has shown that once it takes over an area, rangeland productivity decreases by 75 percent, as the trees strip forage grasses of necessary sunlight and water. And once rangeland has been compromised by redcedar, restoring productivity isn’t cheap: cedar removal can …

The Rope Buck

The stuff one witnesses in the great outdoors never ceases to amaze. As of late, enter the story of the “rope buck.” During Nebraska’s 2019 muzzleloader deer hunting season in December, the neighboring landowner who lives to the south of our farm was in his stand watching for white-tailed deer. A buck emerged at a distance, he closely examined it with binoculars. It was a nice-sized white-tailed buck, but something was very odd about its antlers. As the buck moved …

What are those rocks in my deer woods?

The late deer hunting season is over in Nebraska and now it is time for me to unravel a mystery in the woods of the family farm where I hunt. What in the blazes are those rocks littered about the woodland habitat? I have never seen anything like this scenario. There are many rocks scattered about the lower half of a relatively steep, hilly west/northwest slope in the Schramm Bluffs of Sarpy County near the Platte River in southeast Nebraska. …

Largemouth Bass on Ice

DSCN6315

Participated in a radio interview with a very well known bass jock one time.  I will not drop names here, but if I did, you would know who I was talking about.  It was winter and he was in the area meeting with one of his sponsors.  I guess pro bass jocks do that during the “off-season”. Off-season? We asked him about bass fishing during his “off-season”.  Asked if he had he ever ice-fished? He said he would try ice-fishing …

“Grass Still Ain’t Greener”

PB230028t

Nebraska is not known as one of the top fishing destinations in North America.  Never has been, never will be.  We simply do not have that much water.  On the other hand, folks who think all the good fishing is in some other state are sorely mistaken. This topic was the subject of a blog post I did a few years back, “Grass is always greener”.  In that post I looked deeper into In-Fisherman’s annual Master Angler Program.  Their Master …

Those of us who ice-fish have always known it.  Others are just beginning to figure it out. . . . Only the “cool kids” ice fish! Don’t believe me?  This commercial has been running on TV lately: I know this, they do not come any “cooler” than Matthew McCounghey! And he’s ice-fishing!
