Changes bring happy campers to Lake McConaughy

OGALLALA, Neb. — In registering visitors for campsites, Nebraska’s largest reservoir sailed uncharted waters in 2021. The predominant verdict is that it was a highly successful voyage. Last April, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission implemented changes needed to create a safer, family-friendly environment at the 22-mile-long Lake McConaughy and the smaller reservoir below its dam, Lake Ogallala. River otter season will close Jan. 11

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska’s first regulated harvest season for river otters will close Jan. 11 due to the season close trigger of 75 otters being met. River otters incidentally trapped after Jan. 10 must be turned over to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The season opened on Nov. 1 and otters only were allowed to be harvested by trapping. Mountain lion season ends with four harvested in Pine Ridge

LINCOLN, Neb. – The 2022 mountain lion hunting season in Nebraska’s Pine Ridge closed Jan. 6 when the harvest limit of four (three males and one female) was met. The season opened Jan. 2. LINCOLN, Neb. – Spring turkey hunting permits for 2022 will be available from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission beginning Jan. 10. Nebraska offers birds in every county of the state. The state also offers plentiful and affordable permits, long seasons, great public access and $8 permits for youth. Wild turkey hunters in Nebraska enjoy high success rates. LINCOLN, Neb. – Anglers can learn the basics of ice-fishing or pick up a few new tips from experienced anglers at three Discover Ice-Fishing clinics this month. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s Youth Fishing Program will host two on-ice events and one classroom event. LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will certify youth fishing instructors at a workshop Feb. 13 at Ponca State Park. Instructors are part of the Youth Fishing Program, a statewide team of volunteers and Game and Parks staff who host educational fishing events. Game and Parks names Swenson deputy director

LINCOLN, Neb. – Jim Swenson has been selected as deputy director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Swenson, a native of Oakland, Nebraska, begins his new duties Dec. 27. Swenson came to the agency in 1983, working as a seasonal employee for the parks and resource services divisions prior to gaining a full-time position in 1986. He has been administrator of the parks division since May 2014, leading the team that welcomes millions of visitors to the state parks. …
