Final Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson SHP

Fort Atkinson State Historical Park’s final Living History event of the 2014 season will be held October 4 and 5. Visitors will witness this 1820’s Military Post come alive as volunteer interpreters portray the daily activities of soldiers and civilians as they prepare for the upcoming winter. Reminder of Change to Bowhunter Education

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds hunters that changes in Nebraska law now require them to be certified in bowhunter education if they hunt big game with a crossbow and are ages 12 through 29. Hunters ages 12 and 29 who hunt deer, antelope, elk or bighorn sheep with bow and arrow or a crossbow must carry with them proof of certification of a bowhunter education course. Missouri River Outdoor Expo Celebrates 10th Year

LINCOLN – The Missouri River Outdoor Expo, a huge annual event showcasing outdoor activities of all types, will mark its 10th anniversary Sept. 20-21 at Ponca State Park. Iowa Man Cited for Shooting Mountain Lion

LINCOLN – A 23-year-old Iowa man has been cited for shooting a mountain lion out of season near Crawford on the evening of Sept. 6. The man was hunting deer with archery equipment from a tree stand on Ponderosa Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Dawes County when the incident occurred. He reported shooting the lion to the Dawes County Sherriff’s Department that night. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission officials immediately responded to the scene and recovered the carcass at about …

Hunters Should Be Aware of Possible Toxic Blue-Green Algae

LINCOLN – Hunters around Olive Creek State Recreation Area should be aware of a report that a dog swimming in the lake recently has died. The cause of death is unconfirmed, but it is suspected that ingestion of toxic blue-green algae might be the cause of death. The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality took a water sample at the lake on Sept. 5. Results are expected within a week. Olive Creek, located in Lancaster County, is not one of the …

LINCOLN – Roger Kuhn, assistant director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, was honored with a special award on Sept. 4 at the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD) annual meeting in Omaha. Kuhn, of Ashland, was recognized for his special, extended efforts and contributions that advance the general goals of the NASPD. LINCOLN – Anglers, especially young and inexperienced ones, are invited to attend Family Fishing Night in Broken Bow on Sept. 11.
