More Elk Collared in North-central Nebraska

BASSETT – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission placed tracking collars on three elk near Bassett in north-central Nebraska on Tuesday, the latest installment of a multi-year effort to use real-time location data to determine populations, make harvest recommendations and monitor herd health. Game and Parks contracted a helicopter wildlife capture crew to catch the elk and equip them with GPS tracking collars and ear tags. Spring Turkey Hunting Workshops Scheduled

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host six spring turkey hunting workshops across the state to help prepare hunters for the upcoming seasons. Walleye Fishing Workshop Set for March 12 at Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium

LINCOLN – The public is invited to a free walleye fishing workshop March 12 at Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium near Gretna. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission fisheries outreach program manager Daryl Bauer will present the 7 p.m. workshop, which will include a discussion on walleye habitat, management and fishing techniques. Bald Eagles Break Nest Record in 2014

LINCOLN – A record 146 bald eagle nests were surveyed in 2014 by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and its partners, with 111 of the nests being active. Bald eagles were on federal and state endangered species lists as late as 2007 and 2008, respectively. In less than a quarter century the species has gone from a nonexistent breeding species in the state to one that is relatively numerous, according to Joel Jorgensen, Game and Parks’ nongame bird program …

Run Wild for Wildlife Conservation May 16

LINCOLN – Registration is now open for Run Wild, an annual trail run to be held May 16 at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park. Choose from a 10k or 5k trail run on a scenic, naturally challenging back trail. There also is a 1-mile children’s fun run. LINCOLN – Mid-February is a good time to get outdoors with the family for some fresh air and exercise and go hunting for shed deer antlers. Deer have begun to shed their antlers for re-growth purposes.
