Riverview Marina State Recreation Area reopens after flooding

LINCOLN, Neb. — Riverview Marina State Recreation Area (SRA), which is located along the Missouri River in Otoe County, has reopened to the public. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission temporarily closed the SRA to public use after heavy rains caused flooding. Campgrounds, restrooms and other amenities were under water, and electricity to the park was disconnected. After flood waters receded, staff thoroughly cleaned the area and cleared debris and silt.  Electricity was reconnected. All services and amenities, including the …

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Omaha office remains closed for repairs

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Omaha office of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission remains closed for repairs. The office, located at 8495 Frederick St., was damaged when a business in the same shopping center caught fire in July. Repairs are expected to be completed sometime this fall. Omaha office staff may be reached by calling 402-595-2144. Willow Creek, Rockford lakes on health alert

LINCOLN, Neb. – Willow Creek Reservoir in Pierce County and Rockford Lake in Gage County remain on health alert. During water testing earlier this week, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality detected elevated toxin levels produced by blue-green algal blooms in both lakes. Visitors to Willow Creek and Rockford Lake state recreation areas (SRA) should avoid full body contact activities such as swimming, wading, skiing, jet skiing, etc. Non-contact activities such as boating, fishing and camping are OK. New boat launch opening at Box Butte Reservoir

HEMINGFORD, Neb. — Construction is wrapping up for the upgraded boat launch facility at Box Butte State Recreation Area and its new ramp is expected to be open for this weekend’s visitors. Husker Engineering of Burwell is completing final touches on the new handicapped-accessible launch, considered a big improvement over the old one. Hunters may enter lottery for deer hunting access on the Central Platte River

LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters may enter a lottery to gain deer hunting access to Platte River Recreation Access (PRRA) lands in the central Platte River Valley. According to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, 47 hunters will be chosen from a random drawing in early October and allowed to hunt deer on designated PRRA lands Nov. 16-18. LINCOLN, Neb. – Logan Maring and Wesley Beavers know their catfish. Each correctly guessed the exact weight of Walter, the flathead catfish, in a contest by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission during the Nebraska State Fair. Walter weighed 47 pounds, 7 ounces. In guessing the weight, Maring, of Grand Island, won the adult division and Beavers, 5, of Collins, Iowa, won the youth division. West entrance to Yankee Hill WMA open again

LINCOLN, Neb. – The west entrance to Yankee Hill Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Lancaster County has reopened now that high water has receded. Heavy rains last week had flooded the WMA’s entrance road at W. Yankee Hill Road and SW 56th St. Caution should be used following heavy rains when trying to access any WMA or other property of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in southeast Nebraska because of potentially dangerous water conditions in low-lying areas.

Memphis Lake boat ramp closed temporarily

LINCOLN, Neb. – The boat ramp at Memphis Lake in Saunders County is closed temporarily because of low water. The lake has been drawn down to facilitate a wetland restoration project, and large rocks at the end of the boat ramp have been exposed. The wetland restoration project, a joint effort of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska Environmental Trust and Ducks Unlimited, is expected to improve wildlife habitat, increase wetland management capabilities, and improve hunter access.
