Game and Parks receives NET grant for WILD Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will receive $200,000 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the WILD Nebraska Program. The project is one of the 117 projects receiving $19,501,444 in grant awards from the Trust this year. Of these, 85 were new applications and 32 are carry-over projects. Game and Parks and its partners have been implementing the WILD Nebraska program on private lands since 2000. The agency allocates approximately $100,000 toward WILD Nebraska and requests for …

Butterfly survey citizen science training opportunities available

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will be host two citizen science trainings in June to prepare volunteers to assist with the Monarch and Regal Fritillary Surveys project. This workshop is for anyone interested in completing transect surveys looking for monarch and regal butterflies between June 15 and July 15, 2019. More than 200 volunteers assist with cleanup at Fremont Lakes SRA

LINCOLN, Neb. – Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area officially re-opened to the public May 1 – in no small part, Nebraska Game and Parks staff members say, due to the efforts of a hard-working group of volunteers. On April 27, roughly 250 people showed up at a volunteer cleanup day, removing debris, garbage, sticks and logs. They also planted flowers, painted, and removed flowerbeds. Hlavac a veteran of 44 Cornhusker Trapshoots

DONIPHAN, Neb. – The Cornhusker Trapshoot is celebrating its 50th year in 2019. Les Hlavac has seen 44 of them. That’s how long the Louisville resident has been bringing school shooters to the event. He’s current coach of the NV (Nemaha Valley) Trap Team, which includes students from six schools. Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area reopen after flooding

LINCOLN, Neb. – Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area has reopened to public use. The park was temporarily closed after sustaining damage during March flooding. “Fremont Lakes is an important and very popular place for many Nebraskans to spend time with family and friends,” said Jeff Fields, regional superintendent for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “Our staff and many generous volunteers worked very hard to reopen this park in advance of the busy summer season.” While much of the park …

Beckman is junior high champion at 50th Cornhusker Trapshoot

DONIPHAN, Neb. – Luke Beckman of Malcom 4-H broke 98 of 100 clay targets at 16 yards to win the junior high competition in the 50th Cornhusker Trapshoot on Thursday. Josie Lange of Karp & Krow 4-H (Burwell) had the girls’ highest score at 89. The girls’ top team was Raymond Central with a 323 of 500. Two Rivers SRA tentative reopening date set for May 15

LINCOLN, Neb. – Two Rivers State Recreation Area in Waterloo is tentatively expected to reopen to the public on May 15. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission temporarily closed the area after flooding damaged portions of the park in March. Also damaged was F Street, the road that provides access to the park.
