Hunting

Long Live Trashtalker!

Once in a great while we are blessed with a bird that challenges us to the core!  Trashtalker was that bird.  We met four years ago during a hunt with my daughter.  We had set up in a large hollow or draw that had not shown much activity in the past.  But then…it happened!  A bird sounded off not 100 yards away in the hollow.  It gobbled….roughly 70 times in 45 minutes!  Never met such a vocal bird.  We called …

Turkey Report 2015: Henned-Up

Time for my first report on this spring’s turkey season.  My kids and I have been hunting quite a bit since the shotgun season opened up a little over a week ago.  We have been casual about our hunting, slipping out when we have time, mostly in the evenings so far.  Call me lazy, but I have not been in the field at “0-dark, thirty” yet this season. We have been hunting both some private and public lands, have seen …

Come on, Disconnect for a Day!

What would it be like to go without ultra-modern technology? What if you had to give up your mobile communicating device (cell phone), iPad, iPod, laptop computer, digital cable television, satellite car radio, etc. for 24 hours. That would mean no texting, no Tweeting, no Facebook, no Snapchat, no Facetime, no IM-ing, none of that stuff! Could you do it?  Is it even remotely possible? I know, I know. Call me what you want. I’m an old fart, an “old schooler,” a soon-to-be grandpa. But, come on, face …

Oh Happy Day!

Tomorrow is the opener of our Nebraska spring shotgun turkey season.  Yessssssss!  Actually, many Nebraska hunters have been actively hunting spring toms since March 25 with bow, crossbows and arrows.  And beginning last Saturday youth permit holders could get after ’em with a shotgun.  But, the next time the sun rises, it will be “on” for the rest of us. Pretty Fake

When I started chasing gobblers in the spring very few people used them. Now many feel naked if they walk into the field without a turkey decoy or three. I hunted several years before getting my first fake which was made of foam and looked more looney tunes than lonely hen.  But I put her to use with some great results. In the (over) two decades that have passed since then turkey decoys have changed – a lot.  As manufacturing …
