NGPC Rooster Roundup: Davis Creek WMA

Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners and staff are in the midst of the Rooster Roundup — a quest to hunt pheasants on public land throughout Nebraska. The third stop on their journey is described below. The third day of hunting for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) Rooster Roundup was located at Davis Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) south of North Loup. Davis Creek has 2,450 acres of walk-in public access available. The first of this hunt series was …

Happy Thanksgiving, 2015

DSCN6210

Heading out the door for grandmother’s house.  My family, like most of your’s will be getting together with a lot more family for tomorrow’s feast and long weekend.  I love turkey, roast turkey, smoked turkey, fried turkey, turkey nuggets, turkey strips, turkey and noodles, turkey pot pie, cold turkey sandwiches, turkey jerky, turkey ala king, turkey on a stick, turkey, turkey, turkey! We will spend the requisite time with family, but also will slip out and enjoy some hunting and …

Tracking Fall Turkey

Getting between a turkey's bed and its breakfast usually means success

November is hunting season in Nebraska and as I write this there are no shortages of choices or opportunity for the hunter. Ironically, one option that often gets overlooked around Thanksgiving is the elusive wild turkey. With strong turkey populations, a long season and two-turkeys allowed per permit Nebraska may be the best place to chase fall turkeys, too. Fall turkeys are a bit different in their habits than the ones we chase each spring. Hens are still with the …

It’s Coming, Better Get Ready!

DSCN6313

I will not pretend to know when we are going to have fishable ice this winter.  The long-range forecasts I have been following are calling for a wetter, but also warmer than average winter.  I am still fishing open water and I will absolutely as long as I can.  However, I know this, it is time to start thinking about getting the hard-water gear ready to go. There are a number of auger options on the market today, more than …

Road Work at Lake Wanahoo

EF20140718_620

I suppose I may be the only one who is still fishing open water.  As I said before, yes I am crazy, crazy like a fox.  When I can walk on it, then my open-water fishing will be over for the year (and my ice-fishing will begin!).  So, no, I am not done fishing open water yet, will dry some more off before it freezes. I may be in the minority, but there still may be a few others that …

It Is All Just Fishing!

You all know I am an In-Fisherman junkie.  No other publications, videos, TV shows, radio shows, etc. have taught me more about catching fish!  I was reminded of that again when I picked up the October/November 2015 issue and saw the “Inside Angles”, lead-off column by Doug Stange, From Shore.  In that column, Doug makes the case for fishing from shore and that a person does not necessarily have to own a boat and all of the latest modern toys …

Deer Hunting Summed Up in Unique Way

I am currently in the field enjoying spending quality time with family and friends during Nebraska’s 2015 firearm deer hunting season (despite some of our ever-changing Nebraska weather conditions, HA!). We are seeing improved numbers of white-tailed deer on our farm and the adjacent farms that we hunt in southeastern Nebraska and had success on the opening weekend. My 18 year-old son Noah, a high school senior, who has enjoyed playing football at Omaha’s Creighton Prep High School, sums up his firearm deer hunting experience in …

Carping

IMG_20140916_162223_014

The fisheries biologist side of me will always tell you what a scourge invasive carp are to our aquatic habitats, water quality and sport fish populations.  Common carp have been here for over a hundred years and have been detrimental to a lot of our fisheries.  Pointy-headed fisheries managers will continue to manage carp populations by eliminating them as much as possible in some situations. On the other hand, as an angler, I will tell you that we are always …

Hunting for Traditions

Hunters it’s ok to admit “it”. In fact, you should celebrate “it”. A big chunk of the hunting doesn’t involve shooting something and sometimes doesn’t even take place in the field. Some of “it” happens back at the cabin, farmhouse, camp or the local diner when the gun, or bow, are safely put away. In its best form “it” starts before opening morning and runs well after evening shooting hours close. It is our hunting buddies who we plot and …

World Records

Thinking about something to post on my blog for a Friday, hmm, let me think. . . . I know, it has to be the recent catch of a big fish, A HUGE FISH!!!! You all know that almost everything I blog about concerning hunting, fishing and trapping is NEBRASKA hunting, fishing and trapping.  But, I am a hardcore angler, fish are on my mind all the time, and this week there has been a story about a huge muskie caught …
