“Secret” Lure!

DSCN2458a

You hard-core bass anglers likely will know that the 2016 BassMaster Classic is happening in Oklahoma this weekend.  The Classic is a huge happening each year, especially for bass anglers, but in many ways for a lot of the North American freshwater fishing world.  Once again this year, Rapala has been teasing us with a promised announcement and huge “splash” for a new bait.  Regardless if you liked last year’s Shadow Rap or not, their marketing strategy worked because for at …

Smile! You’re on (WILD) Candid Camera

smile

Pretty sure I am not alone in this arena.  I think its a trait of many hunters, trappers and outdoor enthusiasts in general.  We have a curiosity to know just what is happening when we are not there.  We are driven by a deep desire to know what wildlife travel the same wild areas that we do. Now I can think of just two options that address this inquisitiveness.  The first, simply never leave.  (Ok, it’s not a great option.)  …

Let’s save Hunting

I really hope that is not something we have to say in the coming years but to tell you the truth…it is not looking good.  All hunters, anglers and shooting sports enthusiasts should be very concerned.  Things are about to change.  How they change depends on you! The Problem Each state continues to witness declining hunter and angler numbers, a trend that has been occurring for the past 30 years.  In 1992, peak hunting license sales Nationally peaked for hunters …

Ode to the Season Past

DSCN7169

My ice fishing season ended in literally a week this year; we were on 13+ inches of hard ice, and a week later it was not safe.  It was much too short.  My son and I were left with a feeling of unfulfillment–we needed just one more trip, just one more big fish.  I suppose you could say we have that feeling at the end of every ice season, but we felt it even more this year. I have not …

News Items for Anglers

DSCN6813

On the Nebraska fish and fishing “front”, I have several things I want folks to know about right now.  So, in no particular order. . . . Brady Interstate Lake Boat Ramp In the past year we have completed some new boat ramps and angler access improvements on several interstate lakes in the North Platte area.  One of those was the interstate lake at the Brady interchange.  There are some “finishing touches” that need to be done on that ramp …

McConaughy Spinnerbait Trolling

DSCN3030

I love to see Nebraska waters on fishing shows, and every time I find one I can share with you, you can count on my doing just that.  The most recent one I am aware of is by The Next Bite TV.  They did an episode last year on McConaughy highlighting a very unique presentation for catching walleyes, a presentation that originated in Nebraska!  Here is is, watch it, watch it all! The anglers in the show are professional walleye …

The Addiction: Spring Wild Turkey Hunting

Truth be told, I’m finding it difficult to cope as I wait anxiously for Nebraska’s spring wild turkey hunting seasons to arrive. The days are getting longer, we’ve had some of those abnormally warm winter days, and hints of green are emerging on my lawn! Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m really looking forward to experiencing the spring migration of waterfowl and sandhill cranes, in addition to hunting snow geese, but it’s hard not to not think about wild turkeys in the springtime when there is …

What’s all the buzzzzz about? Nebraska’s state insect

Did you know that the state of Nebraska appointed the honeybee (Apis mellifica) to be the official state insect in 1975? Though not native, these little guys do a lot for us Nebraskans. Honeybees produce beeswax, propolis (aka bee glue), bee pollen, royal jelly, and one of my absolute favorite commodities, HONEY! Honey, or liquid gold, as I like to call it, has endless uses. Spread it on your peanut butter toast, drink it with hot tea to soothe your …

Let’s Talk Fishing!

DSCN2685

I have a busy week ahead of me, and I will not be in the office for a lot of it.  So, before I head out the door, I wanted to let you know about his event that will be happening in York Wednesday night.  With the weather we have had recently, everyone will be chomping at the bit to fish, and this event Wednesday night will help at least a little bit as we talk fishing!  If you are in …
