Reservoir Updates

I have a couple, three news items about Nebraska reservoirs.  None of them are long but I need to get this information out. . . . Conestoga Reservoir Just a quick heads-up for anglers and boaters who might want to use Conestoga Reservoir this spring.  That reservoir is found west of  Lincoln, between the towns of Denton and Emerald, and there has been some ice damage to the boat ramp. There will be at least one section of ramp that …

We now interrupt this blog to bring you the spring turkey season!

This will be the last season my daughter can hunt the youth spring shotgun turkey season.  I am going to savor every minute because I am going to miss it.  In my opinion the youth hunting seasons have been one of the best ideas “we”, the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, have ever had.  This week of youth shotgun spring turkey season is some of my favorite hunting every year.  It is so nice to be able to concentrate on …

A Big Bass Quest

A little over a year ago a fishing buddy of mine began asking some questions about which public body of water in Nebraska would give him the best chance to catch the biggest largemouth bass of his life.  Knowing where he lived, I instantly had an answer for him. I teased you with this last Friday, and I realize by now some of you have already seen this, but for those of you who have not, you are going to …

Pool Demo!

This event is coming soon; put it on your calendar! Don’t tell me that you ain’t a muskie angler, whatever.  That’s OK; if you show up for this, I will guarantee you that you will learn something about the way various baits behave in the water and I will guarantee that you can apply that to your walleye fishing, bass fishing, etc., etc.  Besides that, it will be a lot of fun! While you are at it, you might even …

Welcome To the Party

So far it has been what I would consider to be a “typical” early spring in Nebraska–schizophrenic weather with frequent cold fronts and even lots of snow this March!  Looking ahead at the forecast for the next few days, it looks like things might finally warm up.  I suspect that most will view that as very good news! Whatever. Let me explain my nonchalant attitude. . . . Most of you know I fish every month of the year.  I …

Siouxland Fly Fishing Club

Got another club meeting to tell you about.  Yes, this one is just across the border into Iowa, but there are a bunch of Nebraskans that are part of this group and I will be attending their meeting on March 30.  I am talking about the Siouxland Fly Fishing Club, http://www.siouxlandflyfishing.com/index.htm . I will be talking about fishing opportunities, specifically fly-fishing opportunities across Nebraska for the coming year.  The club meets at 9:00 a.m. to do some fly-tying and then …

Gotta Have It!

Already this spring I have hinted that I am a sucker for new baits, like most of  you, and I even mentioned one or two that I have already bought (it was a good investment, caught fish almost immediately).  Well here’s another one. . . . I have not seen any of those on the shelves yet, but I am warning you–if I find ’em, stay outta my way! Have a good weekend, I know the forecast is cold, …

Fish Recycling

I will always tell you that big fish are not hard to catch because they are so smart, but because they are so rare.  In almost any population of sport fish, any species, large specimens usually are the least abundant.  For that reason, I am a huge proponent of selective harvest.  I am not against harvesting some fish for a meal of fresh fish now and then, and I believe we should maintain the tradition of eating some of what …

Hmm, I’m Hungry for some Mexican Food!

I have blogged about the handicap-accessible fishing pier project at Bowling Lake before, http://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/2012/09/bowling-lake-fishing-pier-project/ .  The group of anglers who got the ball rolling on that project, “Anglers of the Blue Moon”, have already had one fund-raiser at La Paloma Restaurant here in Lincoln.  That evening was such a success that they are hosting another one tomorrow night, March 19.  Here is all the information: Start working on an appetite now, plan to come out and buy some raffle tickets, …
