Survey Suggests Good Recovery for Many Wildlife Species

LINCOLN – All wildlife species surveyed during the 2015 April Rural Mail Carrier Survey appeared to have a good overwinter survival heading into breeding season. Those species also appeared to have rebounded from the severe winter of 2009-2010 and the drought of 2012-2013. Species surveyed were pheasant, bobwhite, prairie grouse, wild turkey, cottontail and jackrabbit. Barring adverse weather conditions during the nesting and brood-rearing seasons and suitable habitat availability, populations appear poised for a good production year. Compared with April …

Burchard Lake Filling Slowly; Boat Ramp Remains Closed

LINCOLN – While Burchard Lake in Pawnee County is slowly filling, the new boat launch facility there is still closed until water levels allow for the safe launching of boats from trailers. While access to the shoreline is open for bank angling, launching of small vessels, including Jon boats, kayaks, canoes and float tubes, is allowed provided they are carried from the road and launched from the shoreline. Wild Elk Being Monitored

LINCOLN – A wild elk observed in the South Bend, Neb., area is being monitored for public safety by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The elk’s proximity to Interstate 80 and major roadways is a public safety concern. The wild elk is not part of the herd at the Wildlife Safari Park. Enders’ Center Dam Boat Ramp Can Launch Small Craft

LINCOLN – Because of a rising lake level following recent rains, the boat ramp at the Center Dam Area of Enders Reservoir State Recreation Area (SRA) can be used for launching small boats and personal watercraft. Boating Ban Still in Place at Bridgeport SRA’s Center Lake

LINCOLN – The temporary boating ban on Center Lake at Bridgeport State Recreation Area remains in effect until further notice. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission recently enacted the ban because of moose activity in the area.
