Robinson Reports: Ups and Downs

This past weekend was really described by the title above, and for once I’m not describing the weather. Speaking of the weather, it absolutely impacted our plan. My buddy Steve and I fished a walleye tournament at Elwood Reservoir this past Sunday, and saying it was brutal is a real understatement. The water temp the previous week had been all the way up to 60, but when the 30 degree nights came along during the week, the water dropped all the …

Robinson Reports: Over the Hump

It finally seems that the cold wintery weather has disappeared. Since we’re well into a late spring, my biggest fear is that it’ll turn into a hot summer in a very short amount of time, which would leave some windows open for a short time to catch specific fish at specific times. Right now, we’re taking what we can get. Water temps across the central Nebraska region have slowly been rising, only to be pushed back down at times by …

Sandpit Fishing 101

If you know anything about fishing in Nebraska, it’s that you are usually not very far from a sandpit of some sort. For miles and miles along the Platte River valley, there are sandpits that were formed during the building of the interstate. There are also private pits that a lot of times are adjacent to these public waters. Add in various other man made pits, and you’ve got quite a selection. Here, we’ll discuss a few general tactics when …

Robinson Reports: Spring Fishing in Central Nebraska

After a nice winter storm during a walleye tournament at Sherman Reservoir, the temps have steadily gotten higher, which has finally made some spring fishing patterns show themselves. I recently spent 6 days in a row doing one type of fishing or another, and things are starting to get “back to normal.” Sandpits have been a staple of fishing in my life for, well, my entire life. I grew up fishing sandpits, and still love fishing them today. We have …

Robinson Reports: Versatility Is Key

On the calendar, Spring arrived about two weeks ago. In the real world, can be difficult to believe at times. The weather has been up and down, and quite frequently. This, of course, can really make spring fishing a challenge. As many of you know, St. Patty’s Day greeted most of the state with glorious weather. My friend Clayton and I took full advantage of this and headed for the Tri-County Canal in central Nebraska. While it was a nice day …

Robinson Reports: From Old Net to New

Have you recently noticed when you use your net to get a fish in the boat, the hooks are sticking in the netting a little more frequently than they used to? And when they do, it takes way more time than it should to get them free? I may just have a solution for you. I have been experiencing this myself for the past year or so. I planned on getting a new replacement net, but decided to try something …

Robinson Reports: Ice Fishing Out West

I don’t believe I’m the only one who feels the winter of 2013-14 is dragging on unnecessarily. With that statement, you might assume I’m not much of an ice fisherman, and you would assume correctly. I know the recent record lows had some ice heads real excited, so I joined them and took the opportunity to travel with some friends in search of fish. We ventured out to western Nebraska and fished areas that none of us had ever seen before. …

Robinson Reports: Reservoir Results

By now, most boats have been put away, and we’re now in the waiting period between the time of open water and all out ice fishing. Area anglers are eagerly awaiting safe ice to walk on, while I’ve heard of others who have already headed north for some fishing. Even though we were on the water less than a week ago, this weather makes it seem farther back than that. We made one last effort that lasted 4 days, and some of the fishing …

Robinson Reports: Slabbing Success

Though the weather has turned colder now, the fishing action has remained hot. The water temperatures have varied anywhere from 41 to 46 in the areas we’ve been fishing, but the fish have yet to slow down. At the Tri County canal system, the saugers are gathered in somewhat predictable areas and definitely stocking up for winter. We found them in water from 12 to 30 foot deep. With the water temps down to 41 degrees, it’s safe to say …

Robinson Report: Fall Fishing

Water temperatures are dropping and the fish are trying to pack on all the pounds they can to make it through another Nebraska winter. As you might imagine, this is benefiting area fishermen. In the Tri-County canal system, the crappies are gathering in areas with numerous types of cover with quick access to deep water. Trees are good, but I’ve found that rocky areas and boat docks are more productive. Once you find what depth the crappies are holding in, …
