Fall Trout Stocking Update

I would blog about something else, but my phone keeps ringing.  Everyone wants to know if their favorite urban or parks pond has been stocked with the 10-inch rainbows yet.  When we publish a stocking schedule, we always post a disclaimer–a breakdown, bad weather, unforeseen events will result in a change in the schedule.  It happens, or should I say, “it happened”:

Fremont Lakes SRA No. 2 trout stocking delayed

LINCOLN, Neb. – Due to vehicle mechanical problems, the stocking of rainbow trout at Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area No. 2 is delayed until the week of Oct. 19.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission had planned to stock 5,000 10-inch trout at Fremont Oct. 15 to enhance fishing opportunities this fall and winter. Stocking schedules can change on short notice for a variety of reasons.

To see the full stocking schedule, visit: OutdoorNebraska.gov/fishstockingreports.

Fishing for trout is a great way to introduce children to fishing because simple and inexpensive equipment may be used. A spinning or spin-cast rod and reel with a hook baited with a worm will work well. Add a split shot a couple of feet above the hook and a bobber a couple of feet above the split shot. Spinners, salmon eggs, dough baits and artificial flies also can catch trout.

Visit OutdoorNebraska.gov/fishing for more information on fishing in Nebraska.

Here is a table of the past two weeks of stockings and note the Fremont #2 stocking did not occur last week, it will occur this week.

I have had a lot of folks disappointed that we will not tell them the date of the stockings.  The schedule you see is our best guess.  If you want to know if they have been stocked yet, I have two suggestions for you:  1. GO FISH.  If the trout have been stocked, you will know.  2.  Check the stocking database.  Generally, when the stockings are completed they will be added to the stocking database.  Usually, that happens the day of the stocking.  Again, keep in mind that we only have so many bodies and stocking trucks are running from one end of the state to the other right now.  The guys will update the stocking database as soon as possible.

Yes, we have been more vague about exact stocking dates this fall.  We do NOT want crowds gathering when the stocking trucks arrive.  We would not want the trout to catch coronavirus.  Yes, I am joking, but seriously, for obvious reasons, we do not want to attract a crowd.

Lastly, if you still do not have a clue about how to catch ’em, or what to do with ’em, this old blog post will getcha started:  Spring Trout Stocking, 2020.

Now, promise me you will take a kid, take a beginner, and GO FISH!  Enter ’em in this too while you are at it, Take ‘Em Fishing.
