I know it is August, and folks do not think that “fall” starts until September. But if you look for the subtle signs, fall has already begun. I was reminded of that earlier this week when my “co-blogger” Joel Jorgensen blogged about Attracting Hummingbirds–It’s Time . If you watch closely, you will start seeing some Monarch butterflies heading south on a north wind, and now is when the hummingbirds are migrating back through Nebraska. It will not be long and the teal will be heading south as well.
I am not a “birder” by any means, but a big part of my enjoyment in the outdoors while I am hunting, fishing or trapping is recognizing and appreciating all of the creatures. I found this video of hummingbirds on the internet and loved it; thought it would be a good blog post for a Friday:
Now as I said, I am not a birder and have no idea where that amazing video was shot. I suspect there may be some hummingbirds there that you will not see in Nebraska, but regardless that is an amazing swarm of hummingbirds!
I try to keep an eye out for hummingbirds especially this time of year, and I can tell you where my family and I have enjoyed the most August hummingbirds in Nebraska–Ponca State Park! There are several hummingbird feeders at the visitor’s center there, and several more at the “shack” at the entrance to the park. When the hummingbirds are there, I have been known to sit in the road and block traffic leaving the park–just go around me!
It is the weekend, grab a fishing pole, grab some binoculars, grab your family, get out and enjoy our Nebraska outdoors! Keep an eye peeled for hummingbirds!
