Fisheries Involved in Honored Projects

LINCOLN, Neb. – Omaha’s Metropolitan Area Planning Agency recently received a 2013 Innovation Award for the Carter Lake Water Improvement Project from the National Association of Development Organizations.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission was among 16 agencies and organizations in Nebraska and Iowa involved in the project to improve water quality and recreation in the 315-acre lake. Project costs totaled $7.2 million, with $2.3 million contributed by Game and Parks.

In September, the Fisheries Administration Section of the American Fisheries Society announced that Game and Parks’ New Reservoir Construction Program was selected as the Outstanding Sport Fish Restoration Project of the Year in the fisheries management and development category.

The Fisheries Administration Section annually honors the state projects that made the best use of federal Sport Fish Restoration funds, which are generated by excise taxes on fishing equipment and boat fuel. Game and Parks’ New Reservoir Construction Program helps natural resource districts incorporate fish- and angler-friendly features into new reservoirs built in eastern Nebraska.
