Jenny Nguyen has been selected for the position of regional public information officer. Nguyen started with the agency on Jan. 14. Stationed in Norfolk, Nguyen will serve all of northeast Nebraska and surrounding areas. Her duties will include: community relations, media relations, public information, photography and writing for NEBRASKAland and all agency media. Nguyen will be providing information and reporting on activities from her assigned area to provide more comprehensive coverage of Game and Parks activities and events.
Nguyen graduated from UCLA in June 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature and Culture. Before attending college, Nguyen lived in the suburbs of Orange County, California after immigrating to the United States from Vietnam with her parents at the age of 2. Nguyen said her “… real excitement growing up happened in the mountains, deserts and wild places of California.”
Growing up in an urban Southern California environment, Nguyen said she found her escape in the outdoors and writing. An outdoors enthusiast, Nguyen’s outdoor accomplishments include treking to the top of Mount Whitney, embarking on a weeklong kayaking expedition in Alaska, and earning her Silver and Ranger Awards as a Venture Scout. She also enjoys horseback riding and cooking.
During her college career Nguyen helped organize and publish FoodForHunters.com in 2011, a blog about preparing and cooking wild game. That same year, she shot her first deer in Lancaster County, Nebraska, and proudly proclaimed herself a hunter. Nguyen loves a great adventure, but says “…coming home to express her experiences with pen and paper is equally enjoyable.”
Before arriving at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nguyen was a freelance writer for the Tiger Woods Foundation and Webyshops.com. She also worked part-time as Social Media Director for the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.
Nguyen received numerous awards for her photography in high school, and her work has been featured in college publications, such as Westwind: UCLA’s Journal of the Arts and Bennington College’s plain china.
