Wetland conditions improve across most of Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – Wetland conditions across most of the state have improved recently, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. On Oct. 11, Game and Parks released an update on the status of Rainwater Basin wetlands, as well as pumping plans for waterfowl hunting seasons. “Due to cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, conditions throughout most of the state and in many Rainwater Basin wetlands have improved over the past month,” said Ted LaGrange, Game and Parks’ wetland program manager. …

LINCOLN – Youth ages 15 and younger are encouraged to participate in special youth pheasant hunts during the Oct. 22-23 statewide youth pheasant, quail and partridge season. Rooster pheasants will be released at 14 wildlife management areas before the special youth hunt season. The special hunts are open to the public, and the number of participants is not limited. Prescribed Burns of Grasslands Scheduled

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will conduct prescribed burns at several state-owned areas to improve grassland and promote wildlife habitat. Prescribed burning stimulates the growth of desirable grasses and forbs and suppresses invasive tree and brush species. Removing residual grass and trees, especially cedars, also will reduce the fire hazard on these areas. Burns are scheduled, as weather conditions permit, for the following areas, listed by county. Wildlife and Recreation Areas in Southeast Impacted by High Water

LINCOLN – Wildlife management areas and state recreation areas in Lancaster, Saline, Fillmore, Thayer, Gage and Jefferson counties of southeast Nebraska are being impacted by high water levels because of recent heavy rainfall. Area users should be cautioned that access to area roads, campgrounds, toilets and other facilities may be limited. Target Shooting Banned at Leonard A. Koziol WMA

LINCOLN – Target shooting at the Leonard A. Koziol Wildlife Management Area (WMA) has been permanently closed to target shooting. Target shooting at the WMA in Howard County is now prohibited because of safety concerns, property destruction and excessive littering. Target shooting is permitted on most WMAs. The areas that have target shooting bans are posted with appropriate signs. Game and Parks to Release Pheasants at Nine Wildlife Management Areas

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will release rooster pheasants at nine wildlife management areas in time for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The nine areas include: Oak Valley (Madison County), Wilkinson (Platte County), Sherman Reservoir (Sherman County), Pressey (Custer County), Branched Oak (Lancaster County), Yankee Hill (Lancaster County), Twin Oaks (Johnson County), Hickory Ridge (Johnson County), and Peru Bottoms (Nemaha County). Be Aware of Multiple Users on WMAs During Hunting Seasons

LINCOLN – Users of the state’s wildlife management areas should be aware of the presence of hunters on those areas during all hunting seasons, but especially for the Nov. 15-23 firearm deer season, when approximately 70,000 hunters will be in the field. Bird watchers, horseback riders, hikers, wildlife viewers and anyone else using those areas are encouraged to use common courtesy by being aware of hunters using the area for the safety of all.
