LINCOLN, Neb. – Wetland conditions across most of the state have improved recently, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. On Oct. 11, Game and Parks released an update on the status of Rainwater Basin wetlands, as well as pumping plans for waterfowl hunting seasons. “Due to cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, conditions throughout most of the state and in many Rainwater Basin wetlands have improved over the past month,” said Ted LaGrange, Game and Parks’ wetland program manager. …

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will conduct prescribed burns at several state-owned areas to improve grassland and promote wildlife habitat. Prescribed burning stimulates the growth of desirable grasses and forbs and suppresses invasive tree and brush species. Removing residual grass and trees, especially cedars, also will reduce the fire hazard on these areas. Burns are scheduled, as weather conditions permit, for the following areas, listed by county. LINCOLN – Wildlife management areas and state recreation areas in Lancaster, Saline, Fillmore, Thayer, Gage and Jefferson counties of southeast Nebraska are being impacted by high water levels because of recent heavy rainfall. LINCOLN – Target shooting at the Leonard A. Koziol Wildlife Management Area (WMA) has been permanently closed to target shooting. Target shooting at the WMA in Howard County is now prohibited because of safety concerns, property destruction and excessive littering. Target shooting is permitted on most WMAs. LINCOLN – Users of the state’s wildlife management areas should be aware of the presence of hunters on those areas during all hunting seasons, but especially for the Nov. 15-23 firearm deer season, when approximately 70,000 hunters will be in the field.
