The Gobble

It is the primary reason I hunt wild turkeys in the spring. It invokes such strong feelings of excitement that it escapes words. It is a crazy sound in nature, really, perhaps even a bit comical. The sound, made by a wild bird and denoting spring, is actually a loud, shrill, descending, gurgling, throaty jumble of chords that lasts about 1-2 seconds. This is the gobble of a male wild turkey. Gil-obble-obble-obble. For those of us who enjoy being outdoors …

The Beauty of Turkey Alley

Ever driven Douglas County’s Rainwood Road from 60th to 72nd Streets just beyond the northern fringe of Omaha? It’s cool! In fact, it’s one of my favorite drives in the metro area. My photos hardly portray how scenic this drive really is. Nearly every time I drive the road (which is fairly often), I always see wild turkeys along it or on it! The locals have nicknamed this stretch of Rainwood “turkey alley.” If you happen to be up in …

Gobbler #3 – The Chocolate Tom

My 2013 Nebraska spring wild turkey hunting season is complete. Took Gobbler #3 Saturday evening hunting in the woodlands of northern Douglas County with Son Zach Wagner. Thanks for shooting the pics, Zach! What a beautiful bird! If you’re curious, according to …

I had to really work to bag this adult gobbler with his thick 9-inch beard and 1-inch spurs. The toms were active but the birds were pretty well bunched up probably due to the weather. It’s frustrating when those big toms have their girlfriends (hens) right around them! It’s hard …

Just Messin’ with the Turkeys

Okay, today I had more fun than should be allowed spring wild turkey hunting! I continue to do what I call are observation sessions with wild turkeys (even though I am toting crossbow equipment, calls, etc. to perhaps bag a gobbler if I feel like it during this archery period). I have purchased all three of my Nebraska spring wild turkey hunting permits and habitat stamp and know full well the season is a long one with outstanding numbers of …
