Missouri River Sauger and Walleye Tracking

DSCN1598

I want to point out some fisheries research work currently being done on the Missouri River in northeast Nebraska.  The easiest way for me to do that is to “copy and paste” a page from our July 2021 Nebraskaland Magazine: As the article says, if you happen to catch one of these tagged fish, we would like to know about it.  If you do not have any other contact information, you can always let me know about it, daryl.bauer@nebraska.gov. The …

Bottom Bouncer

Spinner&Crawler

We are quickly advancing towards July.  Natural prey is going to be peaking in Nebraska waters in the next few weeks, and the bite is naturally going to slow.  Happens every summer. In spite of that, I have heard some great reports from a lot of Nebraska reservoirs.  There is still time to get in on it. I have stated before that probably more walleyes have been caught from Nebraska reservoirs on bottom bouncers and spinner rigs than all other …

Spring Passed

P3190005

The last day I walk off the ice every winter is a bad day.  I hate that day.  Oh sure, I am on the water or in the field somewhere in Nebraska twelve months of the year, but I really love ice-fishing. So I kind of ease into spring.  You know what it is like in early spring. . . well, more like winter many days.  Sure, we will get a day or two of beautiful, warm, sunny weather, but …

No foolin’, annual walleye spawn is here

By Daryl Bauer Nebraska Game and Parks Commission LINCOLN, Neb. – Do you know what it means when the calendar approaches April Fool’s Day? No, it is not time to prank your fishing buddy. It is time for the walleyes to spawn. Many things can cue spawning in freshwater fish: weather, water temperature, moon phase, etc. One of the most important cues is the amount of daylight. For that reason, spawning tends to occur about the same time every year. …

Name It

Walleyec

I have hesitated to blog about this. I am so confused. According to the latest e-mail I received this morning from the Walleye Technical Committee of the North Central Division of the American Fisheries Society, it is officially Stizostedion and NOT Sander. What? Let me explain.  Most of us learned that the scientific name of walleye was Stizostedion vitreum.  I am pretty sure I even memorized that in an Ichthyology class.  Then there was some question about that, and it …

My Turn

WalleyeMe2020Releasec

I posted a week ago that recently I had been out-fished by both my kids, Outfished. Here, I want to note that if you keep casting long enough, eventually things turn your way. My daughter was not with me on this trip, but my son was.  In a couple of evenings, we did not catch a lot of fish, but some really nice walleyes.  I caught all of them. But he took some really good pictures! Thanks, Daniel! The fish …

Outfished

P5250038

I am always thrilled to see folks introducing their kids to fishing at a young age, some of them at a very young age.  There is only one thing I warn them about:  Some day they will grow up and out-fish you! Recently, both of my kids caught their biggest walleyes, same day, same evening.  I caught nothing.  I hooked a fish late, but then lost it. A 27-incher for Emily: A 28 for Daniel: At least they released them! …

Weighty Matters

P5200024

This coming Memorial Day weekend, more walleyes will be caught from Nebraska reservoirs than will be caught most any other week of the year.  In fact, on some waters more walleyes will be caught this coming weekend than any other month.  We have years of angler survey data from several Nebraska reservoirs that demonstrate that is a fact. The walleye spawn is over.  The fish have scattered, and they are feeding.  Oh sure, some cold, bad weather might slow that …

Fall Review 2019

PA240024

I will fish every month, every year, somewhere in Nebraska for some species of fish.  However, I will confess that there are certain times of the year when I am a lot more serious about my fishing. You might be surprised to know that spring is not my favorite time to be on the water.  There are a lot better times when the weather is more consistent, the fish are less interested in reproduction and more interested in feeding, and …

Great Advice!

008(4)c

There is no doubt spring is the most popular time of year for fishing.  Everyone thinks they are an angler in spring (or at least everyone should think that!).  The spring fever runs high and folks just cannot wait to get on the water and catch some fish.  Problem is with relatively cold water temperatures, the bite can be tougher than hoped for. Walleyes are the fish most preferred by Nebraska anglers, and as a cool-water fish they can be …
