Winter Recipe to Try: Baked Rigatoni & Wild Turkey Meatballs

A pasta casserole with turkey, mushrooms and bacon Simple to put together and filling, I love a good baked pasta dish. And having discovered some beautiful velvet pioppini mushrooms at the grocery store, I added them to this casserole for texture and a woodsy flavor that complemented the ground turkey meatballs. However, you may use any mushroom you prefer. The ground meat came from the thighs and legs of a wild turkey, and I didn’t miss the red meat. This …

A Couple of Odds & Ends for the Weekend

I have a couple of somewhat random things to share with you before I head out the door for the weekend. First of all, you have probably heard me say before that understanding predator/prey dynamics is KEY to finding and catching fish.  That is doubly important for anglers because we not only have to find our quarry, we also have to make them bite!  So, here is a short video that I found.  I never get tired of watching big …

Trekking the Ranch for Turkey-Commissioner and Cohorts Get their Gobblers

[ Submitted by Commissioner Mick Jensen] After my last turkey hunting excursion to Lynch, Nebraska with Commissioner Fisher, I decided to try again with friends from Atlanta, Georgia and Minneapolis, Minnesota. After getting permission from Gene and Kelsey Timperely, we headed back to ranch country. Andy Smith had joined me at Eppley Airfield and Jon Donner drove in from Minneapolis.  Preliminary scouting showed the flock likely to use the same roost area so we were set for the next morning!  …

Another Great Gobbler Experience in Nebraska!

I was fortunate enough to have another great gobbler experience this weekend here in Nebraska and was even able to bag yet another bearded bird in northern Douglas County yesterday! I had to really work to bag this adult gobbler with his thick 9-inch beard and 1-inch spurs. The toms were active but the birds were pretty well bunched up probably due to the weather. It’s frustrating when those big toms have their girlfriends (hens) right around them! It’s hard …

A Nice Opening Day Gobbler

Sharing a couple quick pics of a nice gobbler I was able to take on this beautiful opening day of Nebraska’s spring shotgun wild turkey hunting season in northern Douglas County. Decided to go ‘old school’  spring shotgun turkey hunting — no decoys, no blind, just camo, calls and face paint! Had a great hunt, stay tuned to the blog for more pics from the opening weekend of Nebraska’s spring shotgun wild turkey hunting season!

Just Messin’ with the Turkeys

Okay, today I had more fun than should be allowed spring wild turkey hunting! I continue to do what I call are observation sessions with wild turkeys (even though I am toting crossbow equipment, calls, etc. to perhaps bag a gobbler if I feel like it during this archery period). I have purchased all three of my Nebraska spring wild turkey hunting permits and habitat stamp and know full well the season is a long one with outstanding numbers of …

TURKEYS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

I received a phone call yesterday from a woman who lives in a neighborhood just north of Zorinsky Lake in west Omaha concerning problematic wild turkeys. We have a lot of wild turkeys in and around Omaha, and, as some of you know, they are not wary of us humans. In fact, as neat as they are to see, turkeys may become a nuisance by roosting on roofs, in trees near homes, and on decks, and they are known to …

Pictures from the trap-line

Back before Christmas I blogged about doing some trapping again this late fall/early winter, http://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/2012/12/line/ .  I took a few more pictures than what I shared in that previous blog post; thought I would share some more of those with you. Looks like a good place to trap some muskrats, and maybe mink! I mentioned earlier that one thing I love about having a trap-line is that you have to run the traps every day, you get to be in …
