Cross Training

I get a little tired with the exclusivity some anglers have:  You know, “I’m a walleye angler”, or “I only fish for bass”, “Catfish or nothing”.  I get it, we naturally have our favorites, but it gets real old when some are so snobbish that they despise other fish that end up on the end of their lines.  They just do not get it.  Oh, I have my favorites too, but I believe that you can actually become a better angler for …

Talkin’ Trout on TV

Pan-sized rainbow trout stockings for fall and winter fishing come front and center on my LIVE Weekly TV Outdoor Report, Thursday at 6 p.m. CST during the Omaha’s WOWT 6 News sportscast. Northwest Omaha’s  Standing Bear Lake at 138th & Fort Street already has received more than 7,000 of these hearty 10-inch rainbows from the Grove Trout Rearing Station and anglers are catching them! As a reminder, if you are unable to view the live broadcast of the outdoor report, video replays of it can be seen after …

October 2014 NEBRASKAland

You can see the October 2014 issue of NEBRSAKAland on-line right now! Again you will find that issue packed, in fact it is so packed that it is 74 pages long! As the cover shows there is a special section on waterfowl hunting, and I want to point out a story about the “Trout in the Classroom” program. And a story on preparing and eating crawfish, and a memorable Nebraska elk hunt, lots of excellent pictures and a whole lot …

Good Advice

Had a cousin, actually first cousin once removed although I do not know what she was removed from, but I digress, anyway she shared this with me and I think it is pretty good advice, especially for a weekend! Oh, do NOT think that fly-fishing is just for trout!  Right now would be one of the best times of the year to use that fly-rod to catch some Nebraska bluegills!

Pretty Trout Stream on WOWT 6 Outdoors

For my Weekly Outdoor Report on Omaha’s WOWT 6 News, we’re heading to one of my favorite places in Nebraska to do some trout stream fishing – about three hours northwest of the metro area. Take a look at the photo below. Know where we’re going? See how clear the water is in this pristine, spring-fed creek. My wife Polly loves to fish it and catch rainbow trout which are stocked weekly! Prized, wild brown trout thrive in this creek as well. I enjoy catching …

Damselflies

For those of you who are grumpy because you do not ice fish, I have a warmer, more springy, summery blog post this Friday.  I often take a little break over lunch hour and watch some fishing videos.  Although I am not a fly-fishing purist by any means, I love watching fly-fishing videos like those that can be found here, Orvis Fly-Fishing Videos. One of the trailers I found there early this week really caught my attention: That is just …

Digital NEBRASKAland, November 2013

I mentioned last month that for the first time NEBRASKAland magazine was available in a digital format, “Check out the Digital NEBRASKAland”.  The November issue is now available digitally, NEBRASKAland, November 2013. Once again I have a somewhat selfish reason for bringing this to attention in my blog.  If you check out the November issue, you will find an excellent story by Jenny Nguyen, pages 23-28, about raising and stocking trout in Nebraska waters. I discovered something else in that …

Who Needs Live Bait?

I will be the first one to tell you that no baits or lures are magic, nothing catches fish all the time.  And, I will tell you that every bait or lure every made will catch fish if used at the right place and the right time.  The challenge is knowing the right bait for the right place and right time.  Presentation theory and selecting the right baits for the right time and place is a whole topic worthy of …

Spring Break Trout

With teenagers, you take advantage of any time that they may have available and want to venture outdoors. I did just that with the youngest member of our family yesterday. That would be our 15 year-old Creighton Prep High School Freshman Noah (Wagner). It’s spring break week at Prep and Noah indicated to me that he might like to get out and do a little fishin’ at the Two Rivers SRA Trout Lake near Waterloo and then go visit Grandma. …
