Cutthroat Stockings

DSCN5214

A couple of weeks ago I gave a “heads-up” that we were finally getting some cutthroat trout stocked in Nebraska waters again.  Many anglers have been looking hard for a cutthroat to complete their Trout Slam.  At that time, the first of those stockings was made in the White River southwest of Ft. Robinson.  We have stocked a few more thousand of those fish since then, here is the complete list: White River 1,000 Wood Reserve Ponds 600 Middle Fork …

Trout Slam Update, Summer 2019

TroutSlamPin

It has been way too long since I have given an update on our Trout Slam challenge.  Yes, there has been less interest since the challenge was introduced, and there is good reason for that–I will explain in just a minute.  However, folks are still out there catching trout, still making progress towards completing their Trout Slam! As of right now we have had 116 anglers enter 223 fish for the Trout Slam.  There have been a few mis-identifications or …

IMG_1397

I will always tell you that if you like to fish, if you want to improve as an angler, join a fishing club!  I can think of no better way to learn, plus it is a whole lot of fun to hang out with a bunch of folks who have the same interests, and our local fishing organizations are a huge asset in supporting our fisheries and our sport! I know this is short notice, but I will be at …

Trout Slam Update, September 2018

TroutSlamPin

It has been a few months since I gave an update on our Trout Slam recognition program .  With the weather cooling, one of the best times of year to catch our cold-water trout lies ahead of us.  So, let me see if I can pique your interest to get out there and explore our trout waters. Entries during the summer slowed to a trickle, and there were several weeks where I did not see any entries at all.  I am …

LINCOLN, Neb. – A project scheduled to start in June on Pine Glen Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Brown County will improve stream habitat on Long Pine Creek for fish and anglers alike. As a continuation of the cool-water stream program, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will build several in-stream habitat features that create a variety of current breaks for resting and feeding trout. Specific habitat features also will narrow the stream to increase flow velocities and add pool …

Fits and Starts

IMG_1496 (2)crop

If you have lived in the great state of Nebraska for any length of time, you know that spring is a frustrating time.  It comes in “fits and starts”.  I laugh at the wild swings in weather, and the wild swings in the mental health of those hoping for warm, sunny days.  Ha.  We are going to live with this schizophrenia for several weeks yet, might as well make the most of it! For example, in this past week I …

Trout Slam

I am always touting the diversity of fishing opportunities Nebraska has to offer; I believe that is one of the unique things we do offer anglers in the state.  That certainly includes cold-water fisheries that are capable of supporting trout year-round.  No, I am not talking about the urban and parks waters where we stock put & take trout in the fall, winter and early spring, I am talking about some of the prettiest places in the state where we …
