I Have Seen that Face Before

P8200091t

Got a message from an angler a week ago who had some questions I could answer.  I get a lot of those.  He mentioned that he had caught a big tiger trout.  That piqued my interest, so I asked how big?  He answered and sent a photo. I took one look at the photo and knew I had seen that fish before!  (I get around, I know a lot of fish!) Check out the markings!  Same exact fish!  I had …

Trout Slam Update, Summer 2022

ScottJohnsonTroutSlam2022

It has been a while since I have done a Trout Slam update; here it is: We have had 15 Trout Slams completed so far in 2022.  Fourteen different anglers have completed the Trout Slam this year; one angler has completed it twice this year.  Of the fourteen anglers that completed a Trout Slam in 2022, seven of them have completed at least one Trout Slam previously.  Four of those “repeats” completed their second Trout Slam (Kurt Seevers, Justin Bignell, …

Trout Slam, A Long Time Coming

I mentioned in the latest Trout Slam Update that my son and I had finally completed our Trout Slams.  It took us far too long to finally get back to the northwest corner of our great state where we could check off brook and cutthroat trout.  Simply put, a person has to visit that corner of Nebraska to complete a Trout Slam.  What a great excuse to go there! Let me go back and rehearse my Trout Slam and make …

TroutSlamMestonFall2021

I promise, we have not forgotten about Trout Slam certificates.  Quite a few entries came in this fall; time to get a batch of certificates sent out and time to give you an update! There will be sixteen certificates sent out to fifteen different anglers.  Ten anglers completed their first Trout Slam.  Of the other six, three completed their second Trout Slam and three completed their third Trout Slam.  One, Eric Einspahr from Lincoln, finished his second Trout Slam and …

Adventure Report, Wedding Trip

P8170016 (2)

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I would be “outta the office” for some time for my daughter’s wedding.  I also hinted that we were making a little trip for the wedding and that the fishing gear was definitely going along.  Time to give you a report. . . . That trip was to one of our favorite places, western Nebraska.  More specifically, we spent some time at Ft. Robinson.  The wedding went great, we had a great time …

Trout Slam Update, Summer 2021

TroutSlamSeanOlsonCutthroat2021

There have not been a lot of Trout Slam entries coming in, but there have been a few.  Time to give an update and get certificates mailed out. . . . In case you forgot, the Trout Slam is an angler recognition program we initiated a couple of years ago.  We started it to highlight our cold-water fisheries around the state.  Those are some beautiful places, and there are beautiful trout in those waters.  All a person has to do …

Trout Slam Update, Fall 2020

TroutSlamSandraReddish

I know some of you have wondered if we were ever going to send out Trout Slam certificates and pins again?  We are, they will be coming soon.  Not making excuses, but we do those things in batches and as long as I was receiving Trout Slam entries this fall, I thought we should wait to do the next batch.  So, sorry to take so long. There will be twenty more anglers receiving Trout Slam certificates and hat pins.  You …

Trout Slam Update

TroutSlamJacobPattersonCutthroat

Been a while, too long, since I have given an update on our Nebraska Trout Slam.  I am sure most will remember, but in case you do not, follow the link to learn what a Nebraska Trout Slam is.  Briefly, it is catching one of each of the four species of trout found in Nebraska; brook, brown, cutthroat and rainbow.  Get that done, register your catches, and you will receive a certificate and hat pin. According to my latest ciphering, …

Cutthroat Stockings

DSCN5214

A couple of weeks ago I gave a “heads-up” that we were finally getting some cutthroat trout stocked in Nebraska waters again.  Many anglers have been looking hard for a cutthroat to complete their Trout Slam.  At that time, the first of those stockings was made in the White River southwest of Ft. Robinson.  We have stocked a few more thousand of those fish since then, here is the complete list: White River 1,000 Wood Reserve Ponds 600 Middle Fork …

Cutthroats! Finally!

DSCN5214

I have been promising that we have been raising some more cutthroat trout and will be stocking them again in Nebraska waters.  I just got word that the first of those stockings has happened!  A thousand 10-inch cutties were stocked in the White River in far northwest Nebraska today! Those of you still needing a cutthroat to complete your Nebraska Trout Slam, there are some more out there again! We have a few thousand more cutthroats at the Grove Trout …
