State Record Summary, 2017

StateRecordBigmouthBuffaloBowMay2017

Time for my “annual report” on state record fish in the past year.  As with most years there was some state record activity and there were some surprises! Surface Spearfishing  There were no fish entered for surface spearfishing records in 2017. Underwater Spearfishing We had four fish certified as new underwater spearfishing state records in the past year.  The smallest of those was a whopping 1 ounce alewife taken from Lake McConaughy. In September, a 10 ounce shortnose gar was …

LINCOLN, Neb. – Two state fishing records have been certified this summer by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Eric Funk of Lincoln set a bowfishing record May 20 when he arrowed a 56-pound, 6-ounce bigmouth buffalo at Johnson Lake southwest of Lexington. His fish was 41 inches …

StateRecordTriploidCrappieRodReelApril2017

There has not been a lot of activity on the state record front, but I have a couple of fish and a couple of stories to share with you: Rod & Reel The first goes way back to April; the application literally came in right after I cleared the last batch of state record applications.  So, Brent Stephens of Kearney believes that we forgot all about his state record catch.  Sorry, Brent. Redear Sunfish On Jan. 3, Kelly …

So far all of the applications have been for fish caught by rod & reel.  Let me tell you about them in the order in which they came in: Tiger Trout If you have not heard about the Tiger Trout being stocked in Nebraska waters by now, take a minute and review, Tigers.  We started recognizing state record Tiger Trout back …

State Record Summary, 2015

StateRecordRodReelPaddlefish2015

At the end of each year I like to look back at the state record fish that were certified; kind of a “state record annual report”.  It is time to do that again. . . . Surface Spearfishing Let me start with the surface spearfishing state record category.  We typically do not see a lot of surface spearfishing record fish in a year and 2015 was no exception.  There was one fish certified as a surface spear-fishing record last year, …

State Record Update, June 2015

I have a few state record applications sitting here on my desk; time to give you an update.  Let me just take ’em in order. . . . Tiger Trout Tiger trout are a brown trout X brook trout hybrid.  Tigers have never been stocked in Nebraska waters, but we have a few Pine Ridge streams where both brown trout and brook trout are present and hybridization in the wild is a possibility.  We had the first rod & reel …
