On this Saturday morning, April 4, 2015,  I bring the “Grandmaster of Nebraska Spring Wild Turkey Hunting” to you on my Great Outdoor Radio Show. Who is the “Grandmaster of Nebraska Spring Wild Turkey Hunting?” It’s this man! None other than legendary turkey hunter, veteran turkey call maker and humorist Dick Turpin of Lincoln, NE! Paradox

I fully realize our spring turkey season is over, officially closed on the last day of May, and I know most have been done hunting for a long time now.  In this world of “what’s new, what’s next?” no one wants to read about that old news.  But, I have some thoughts rattling around in my head and I need to put them down in writing.  You can read them too if you want. . . . I spent a …

Adventure Report, May 2014

Many of you know that the last month has been a difficult one for me.  If you did not know, my Dad was battling cancer since last December.  Although he never was in a lot of pain, he just lost all strength and vitality and passed away about sunrise on May 18.  As you can imagine, his condition and trying to be there for him and Mom have occupied a lot of time in the past few weeks.  But, as …

The Bittersweet Last Turkey of Spring

With May 31 being the last day, the end of turkey season is near.  Though our Nebraska spring season is long, the end is always tough to take for us addicted to chasing the gobble – even when it ends successfully.  Here’s how mine ended this past holiday weekend… Saturday morning I rolled out of bed at 4:00 a.m., checked radar and climbed back under the covers when it revealed a large, colorful swath of rain parked itself on top …

Ground Blind Discussions

It’s now the middle of May. Spring turkey season in Nebraska is entering its final weeks.  I have already spent a good number of hours in a ground blind – mostly with members of my family – and I hope to spend several more in the days to come.  For sheer excitement the portable blinds cannot compete with sitting at the base of a tree as a gobbler closes in, but they do give a person plenty of time to …

Happy Mother’s Day 2014

Sunday is Mother’s Day.  I have some pictures from my time in this spring’s turkey “woods” that I think mothers and others will appreciate.  Let me share some of them. There have been lots of early morning sunrises, some of them dewy. A person can follow a progression of wildflowers in Nebraska through the year.  This spring I have noticed as several small flowers finally peeked out.  I found this one high on a cedar ridge. I believe that is called …

5 Things Every Turkey Hunter Should Have

I have been hunting turkeys for over 30 springs now.  That may or may not mean that I have learned anything about spring turkey hunting.  You will have to decide that.  I do know that I have some ideas about what I would consider to be critical equipment, “must haves”, for every spring turkey hunter.  Let me show you a picture of my Tom from last year, four of those 5 important pieces of equipment are included in this picture. …

Day Off

Nebraska may be the only state in the union that recognizes Arbor Day as an official state holiday, but I am glad we do!  If you have not done it already, you need to go to Arbor Lodge sometime, see the mansion and grounds, and learn about the significance of this Nebraska holiday.  My buddy Randy Fox is superintendent there, tell him “Hi” for me. I will enjoy my day off, may not plant a tree, but probably will be …

The Easter Weekend Turkey Report

Ok, first I have a confession. I was only able to spend Friday morning in the turkey woods. The holiday weekend took me out of the state to spend time with family.  However, my brother spent three straight days chasing gobblers this weekend in eastern Nebraska and reported identical experiences to my lone endeavor – we are smack dab in the middle of the peak breeding phase.  Now this may sound like a good thing, but it can be the …
