Memorable Snows

I know what you’re thinking. No, this is not going to be a blog about the memorable snow storms I’ve experienced growing up in the Cornhusker State. Nope. This is a going to be blog post about the memorable times I had last year hunting snow and Ross’s geese during Nebraska’s Light Conservation Order hunting period here in Nebraska. I can favorably recall each and every experience! I saw huge flocks of light geese. I watched superb dog work. I was fortunate to harvest …

Dogs of the Conservation Order Complete the Hunt

“The journey of life is sweeter when traveled with a dog …” Unknown. I have always commented that dogs complete the hunting experience, especially when it comes to waterfowl.  This is so true in the current Light Goose Conservation Order hunting period on Snow and Ross’s Geese here in Nebraska! My Marsh Madness: Selection Sunday Light Goose Hunt

Yesterday was an exciting day for college basketball in this state with both Creighton and Nebraska qualifying for the March Madness of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in the same region (congrats to both the Jays and the Huskers, and they may even end up playing each other!). Sometimes, I think that is the case for the snow goose. Don’t get me wrong…I love to chase these critters as much as anyone but after a few years of chasing these birds I have come to a new level of respect. To say the snow goose is an intelligent bird is to …

Don’t Turn Your Nose Up at Snow Geese

It really perturbs me when folks call them “sky carp,” “lutefisk with feathers,” or “an over-cooked catcher’s mitt!”  Yes, I’m talking about Snow geese! Do you like them? I love to eat them! I do! I’ve literally shot tons of snow geese in my hunting life, and I’ll tell you that great tasting snow geese at home actually start in the field with proper care. There’s no question that lack of preparation in the field is the reason that some who like to hunt waterfowl dislike Snow geese. You have …
