News Items, Sept. 14, 2020

MulberryBendBoatRamp2020

Just a couple of news items I want to include in the ole blog today.  Yes, I know these are going to be of limited interest, but there are a few anglers who will want to know.  That is why I do it! After last year’s flooding, I noted that a number of pits on our lower Platte River State Recreation areas were going to need renovations.  That process is going to take some time, not all of those fisheries …

Pelican Renovation

P9050013

I was outta the office a week or so ago to help do some field work.  I got to help with some work on one of my favorite waters in one of my favorite parts of the state–Pelican Lake on the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). I am not going to rehearse the details, or the merits, of the large Aquatic Habitat Rehabilitation project that is ongoing on the Valentine NWR.  If you have been living under a soapweed and …

Breakwater (3)

Got a couple of updates on Aquatic Habitat/Angler Access/Renovation projects.  As a matter of fact, I blogged about both of these back in September, Some News Items, September 2017. Merritt Reservoir As noted the boat ramp/angler access project at Merritt Reservoir was long-awaited and postponed for a year or two because of high water levels.  Now, I will NEVER complain about high water in any of our irrigaiton reservoirs, but in this case it did delay the new boat ramp …

Wehrspann Reservoir Shad Removal, Two Days Later

wehrspanncoldgloomy

Lord knows the recent fisheries management work at Wehrspann Reservoir in west Omaha has been THE topic of discussion this week.  I want to add this update. . . . Our field biologists that did the treatment went back today to see how things looked.  As you can imagine they discovered hundreds of thousands of dead shad.  How many?  I cannot tell you an exact number or even an estimate.  But, there are photos floating around the internet and here …

I wanted to blog about this today, waited for the news release to be published, and now am finally getting around to it after answering questions about it all day long! Gizzard shad targeted for removal from Wehrspann Lake LINCOLN – The chemical rotenone has been applied at Omaha’s Wehrspann Lake in order to remove gizzard shad. Lake Yankton Revisited

IMG_2255

Lake Yankton is the small lake right below Gavins Point Dam.  It is also known as Cottonwood Lake and is actually border water between Nebraska and South Dakota.  With Lewis & Clark Reservoir and the Missouri River adjacent there are lots of fishing opportunities in the area, but Lake Yankton and its adjacent camping has always been very popular with anglers. The last time I blogged about Lake Yankton was to inform folks about the rotenone renovation that was being …

Pawnee Reservoir Low-Dose Rotenone Treatment Re-visited

Some of you may remember that fisheries managers for the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission tried an experimental fisheries management technique at Pawnee Reservoir a year ago last fall, Pawnee Renovation.  Unlike typical rotenone renovations where all fish are removed from a body of water, the effort at Pawnee was one where we hoped that a relatively low dose of rotenone would selectively eliminate gizzard shad and white perch. Let me share some more of what we know about that fisheries …

Watts Lake Renovation

Our Nebraska Game & Parks fisheries personnel had an opportunity to get another quick renovation done this spring.  There have been some news releases on this, but I am guessing many folks may have not heard about it.  Here is an extended version of the news release, a version with a little more detail on why these projects are so beneficial: Watts Lake Renovated to Improve Fishery Recently the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission(NGPC) renovated …
