Fall Trout Stockings 2019, West

FallTroutStock1

Without a doubt, one of the most common questions I am hearing right now is “when are the trout going to be stocked?”  Seems like everyone is wondering about the fall stockings of catchable-size rainbows in urban and parks waters around the state. Those stockings occur about the same time every year, and that time is October, usually mid-October.  I do not have the full schedule yet for this fall’s stockings.  We are still working out some logistics and honestly, …

Trout Slam Update, Summer 2019

TroutSlamPin

It has been way too long since I have given an update on our Trout Slam challenge.  Yes, there has been less interest since the challenge was introduced, and there is good reason for that–I will explain in just a minute.  However, folks are still out there catching trout, still making progress towards completing their Trout Slam! As of right now we have had 116 anglers enter 223 fish for the Trout Slam.  There have been a few mis-identifications or …

One Fish

You likely have heard my philosophy about when to fish:  The best time is whenever you have time, every time you have time.  In practice that means I have a lot of fishing trips that last a couple, three hours, I fit them in whenever I can. Ideally, those short trips are made at prime times.  I would rather spend a few hours fishing during the right time than lots of hours at the wrong time, but sometimes you just …

Elm Creek trout stocking suspended until habitat improves

NGPC Latest News logo

LINCOLN, Neb. – Rainbow trout stockings will not occur this spring at Elm Creek because high water has had a detrimental impact on trout habitat there. Until stream conditions improve, the likelihood of Elm Creek holding and supporting trout is impaired. With more stable water flows, habitat conditions should improve at Elm Creek, which is located east of Red Cloud in Webster County, and stocking can resume in the future. In addition, inclement weather prevented the trout stocking at Plum …

It seems that every other blog post I have done for the past month has been about spring trout stockings.  Might as well continue the trend: More rainbow trout stockings scheduled for March 30 LINCOLN, Neb. – Seven more lakes and ponds are scheduled to be stocked with rainbow trout March 30, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Update on Spring Trout Stocking

DSCN4510

It is going to take a while to sort out what impacts all of this flooding is going to have on our recreation, wildlife, and parks areas.  Likewise, it is going to take some time for us to evaluate just what the impacts are going to be to many private and public fisheries.  Right now, I have heard a lot of things, some I know to be true, but some I am going to wait until we know more.  I …

Fall in Review, 2018

PA220029

I have already suggested some things to do during this “‘tweener time” while we wait for safe ice.  Naturally, one thing we like to do as anglers is reminisce about past trips, past successes, big ones caught.  That reminiscing could include years past or just the current year, but for me, this time of year, I like to look back over the fall fishing that I just finished. I fish hard in the fall, as much as possible.  It is …

Adventure Report: Thanksgiving Combo

BigTroutCrop

Took an extra day off over the long Thanksgiving holiday and missed the weather and bad roads coming home.  Need to catch up with another blog post. . . . I “called my shot” a bit last week expecting that I would spend some time both hunting and fishing with family over the long weekend.  We feasted, played games, enjoyed the time together and yes, hunted and fished. It always feels good to go for a little walk after the …
