Thanksgiving Weekend Rooster Report

I hope everyone reading this got to spend some time outdoors this past weekend.  Because it was a great extended-weekend to be out.  I got to see pictures of successful waterfowl hunts, archery deer hunts and even got to add some of my own rooster harvest photos. Due to several reasons (mainly food, football and family) my excursions were pretty short-lived – an hour here, a couple hours there.  I probably spent more time driving than I did walking behind …

All About Family, Outdoor Experiences and Nature

“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” -
Aristotle. I am currently out in the field participating in Nebraska’s firearm deer hunting season which runs through this Sunday, November 23rd. It was great to hunt with my brother Steve and also my cousin Mark this past weekend. I keep telling you that firearm deer hunting for me is all about enjoying family, outdoor experiences and nature. Here are some photos I took that reflect those things. If you are firearm …

Let the Bird Season Begin

As I pointed out in a 2012 Blog,  tomorrow (10/25) marks the beginning of a new year for many upland bird hunters.  And according to the 2014 Upland Game Outlook we can expect to do a bit better than last year, especially with quail.  I hope this an upward trend that continues for some time – suitable habitat and weather being the limiting factors – and know I am not alone. I am a bird hunter, with a slight bias …

On WOWT 6 Outdoors this week, I’ll be highlighting Nebraska’s two-day youth upland game bird hunting season that will be taking place this the weekend of October 18th & 19th. As a reminder, my Weekly Outdoor Report airs LIVE on Omaha’s WOWT 6 News on Thursday at 6 p.m. CST during …

The benefits of Teal

At thirty minutes before sunrise this past Saturday one of my favorite events arrived in Nebraska – teal season.  The short season gives me an annual opportunity to renew the fondness I hold for this small duck and a chance to try out new excuses for missed shots. Blue-winged, green-winged and even cinnamon teal pass through Nebraska but they can all be summed up in one word – quick.  Teal are quick to arrive on the scene, sometimes quick to …

Organic Therapy: The Sunrises and Sunsets of Hunting

You’ve been sitting there quietly enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of nature while waiting for the wild game specie you’re hunting to appear. Then the moment comes when the sky is full of color as the top of the sun’s disc first breaks the plane of the horizon in the morning, or when the top of the sun’s disc sinks below the horizon in the evening. You marvel at the color in the sky while the  stresses of life leave you. The draw of sunrises and …

Dabbling with Dove Decoys

This blog was originally posted on August 31, 2009 but it has been updated with new information.  I like to dabble with dove decoys. That’s really all I do, it seems. Bagging doves for the grill during Nebraska’s popular dove hunting season (which opens on Sept. 1) is, well, just a bonus actually. Normally, I run out of shells before even getting close to reaching my daily bag limit during the season. I get those erratic, fast-flying doves close enough for shots, but connecting …

Why Hunt the Husker State?

Mixed bag opportunity. Not much pressure. Reasonably priced permits and stamps. Mobile apps for information and some permits. Special $5.00 youth permits. Long seasons. Generous bag limits. Great tradition. Crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and the nicest folks you’ll meet anywhere! WHEW! Believe it or not, those are just some of the reasons why I think you should consider planning a hunting trip here in Nebraska this fall or winter! Having lived in Nebraska all of my life and traveled the state extensively, …
