Neat Message from Colorado

I recently received the email message (and photos) below from Colorado and wanted to share it with all of you. Jane Gustafson, who heads our Game and Parks Marketing Section, says that the focus of agency advertising efforts is to get kids in the field hunting and to make Nebraska the place where they do this. She also says that many Nebraskans have family out-of-state and what a better way to encourage these folks to come back, visit and spend …

What Happens in the Blind, Stays in the Blind?

What happens in the goose hunting blind, stays in the goose hunting blind, right? Nope, wrong! I thought I’d share some of the more fun photos I snapped at our eastern Nebraska Canada goose hunting blind thus far this season. I hope you enjoy the pics (my buddies are going to boot me out of the blind after seeing a couple of these, you realize, and even the dog and the decoys weren’t sparred!). Happy 2014, keep warm!

Goose Hunting Means Aerobics

Many people I know, perhaps you, think hunting Canada geese over decoys from a heated pit blind is a comfortable, easy thing to do in the out-of-doors. But, I’m here to tell you that it’s not! At least, not with my goose hunting scenario. First there’s the hike in to the blind with gun and associated gear — almost a half-mile in distance. Then, there’s the dozens and dozens of decoys to set out which takes about an hour or so to complete. After that, you get …

So, Why Do You Hunt?

Just last night, after returning home from my outdoor TV gig at Omaha’s WOWT Channel 6, and unloading my vehicle filled with various pieces of waterfowl hunting gear/TV props (goose decoys, layout blinds, camouflage clothing, etc.), a new neighbor and I got to talking. After exchanging pleasantries and ‘small talk,’  she asked me the question: “So, why do you hunt?” I explained to her that hunting is who I am, it is part of my fabric and I conveyed to her my deep, eternal affection of and the connections I have …

The Dog Makes the Hunt

For me, watching and hanging out with a good hunting dog really makes the hunt! This week I went Canada goose hunting with friends along Nebraska’s Platte River corridor in western Douglas County and thoroughly enjoyed Buddy, a three year-old black labrador retriever. The moment I entered the blind, I instantly fell in love with Buddy! Here’s Buddy at work having fun on a goose retrieve. Buddy and I after one of Buddy’s face-licking sessions on me, HA! Whenever you …

Our Deer Hunting Land: Thanks Granddad!

To those of us born and raised in Nebraska with longstanding family farming roots, the firearm deer hunting season represents a very special, unique tradition. Each season, I take the time to reflect what it must have been like for my great, great, great, great grandfather, James Murphy, a Union Army Veteran, as he saw a whitetail deer hidden in the prairie grass of the land he was about to claim in southeastern Nebraska after the war in the late …
