Flats and ‘Skies

FlatSkie

You know I love big fish, big fish of any species, but especially big, bad, predator fish.  Nebraska is blessed with a variety of fish, including a variety of large predator fish.  Two of our largest, apex predator fish would be flathead catfish and muskellunge. Flatheads and muskies are not found in every Nebraska water, but we do have some excellent fisheries for both species.  Obviously, flatheads and muskies are two very different fish.  Or are they?  Having fished for …

Slump Buster

DSCN6363

I am happy to report that I recently ended a slump.  It had been a long, LONG time since I dried off a muskellunge. Sure, you can comment about my lack of skills as an angler.  Not going to argue with that.  I suspect there also will be some miserable souls offer commentary about the poor fishing we have in Nebraska.  Whatever. Those of you who have spent any time seriously, intentionally, targeting muskies know that under the best of …

Some Muskie Love

Nebraska muskies have received some love recently; let me share a couple of articles with you: The first ran in Omaha Magazine and was written by Doug Meigs: The Fish of 10,000 Casts The second was in Nebraskaland: A 50-inch Minimum STORY BY JEFF KURRUS Merritt Reservoir has long been one of Nebraska’s top fishing destinations. Merritt is an irrigation reservoir, but unlike some others, it fills every year because of the ample flow of the Snake River. It consistently …

Some Lightness for the Weekend

SpringSunsetF

I have been getting “out” and practicing some social distancing when I can.  But, like many, I have spent a lot of time recently watching stuff on the internet.  Let me share a couple that I liked: First one is an interesting, but short, battle with a muskie: If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that most of the time I am standing in a pair of waders while I am fishing.  I fish from …

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

P6060027

I have often said that one of the things I like most about trout fishing is the beauty of the fish.  Even a 6-inch brook trout can be a prized catch because they are such pretty fish.  I am convinced that is part of the glamour of trout fishing, that and fly-rods, and the fact that cold-water habitats where trout reside typically are also really purdy places. Likewise, I am awed by the diversity and beauty of fish on a …

“Yes, We Have No Muskellunge”

DSCN6363

The internet is a funny place, but you know you can believe everything you see and hear there. . . . Recently, I was admiring some photos and the stories that went along with them about some really nice muskies that had been caught and released.  Yes, I was jealous especially knowing they had been caught from a Nebraska waterbody.  Somewhere in the discussion that followed someone asked, “Which state?”, as in “surely those had to be caught from someplace …

What Lurks Beneath, June 2018

BOakFlattySpring2018

It has been awhile since I have teased you with photos of some of the big fish that our field biologists have had their hands on.  Time to change that. . . . We do a lot of our fish population sampling in the fall, but there is also some that is done in the spring and summer.  Again let me say that when pointy-headed fisheries biologists are sampling fish they are NOT just trying to catch the biggest ones, …

I Love (Hate) Muskies!

IMG_1570 (2)Blurred2

I noted last week that spring was in full swing and I would be in the field as much as possible taking advantage of it.  That has been true and I have some turkey hunting stories to tell. . . . Before I get to that, you know I have been on the water this spring, literally went right from ice-fishing to open-water fishing, but I have not posted any fishing updates for a few weeks.  You also know that …

Huskerland Muskie Hunters

HuskerlandMuskieHunters

This week I will be talking muskies!  Once again I will tell you that I have not been to a meeting of Nebraska’s Muskies Inc. Chapter, Huskerland Muskie Hunters, for a while and it is time to remedy that!  They will be getting together this coming Thursday evening, at the Scheel’s store in west Omaha, 7:00 p.m.  The meeting room there is downstairs, when you come in the doors ask an employee and they can point you in the right …
