LINCOLN, Neb. – Parks staff of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will burn brush piles the week of Dec. 14 at Mormon Island and Windmill state recreation areas. LINCOLN, Neb. – Mormon Island State Recreation Area is temporarily closed because of damage caused by a storm early Aug. 7. Winds of 87 mph and damaging hail were reported in the area of the park, located 3 miles north of Doniphan in Hall County, and surrounding communities. Mormon Island is closed to public access until park staff can clear roadways and remove dangerous trees from the area.

Late last week, an ice jam on the Platte River led to flooding in parts of the recreation area, and the campground lost power. LINCOLN – Mormon Island State Recreation Area (SRA) south of Grand Island cannot be accessed via Exit 312 on eastbound Interstate 80 due to construction. The westbound exit is open, however.
