One Down, One to Go!

IMG_0655

Had a great ice fishing clinic at Lake Wanahoo this past Saturday.  If you were not there, you missed a beautiful day on the ice, and you missed catching fish! “Hey, what’s that banner doing out on the ice?” Bring your baby doll if you wish! Class in session! FLAAAAGGGGGGG!!!!!!  (No, not the big event banner, the tip-up!!!!!) “I know you’re down there, BITE!” We had a lot of folks come out, I have not heard the official count, but …

Ice Fishing Clinics

DSCN5305

Just this morning I had a gentleman ask me questions about getting started ice-fishing.  I had an easy answer for him!  Attend one of our Discover Ice Fishing Clinics! The first of those for this winter is scheduled for this coming Saturday, Jan. 14, at Lake Wanahoo just north of the town of Wahoo.  We will “set up shop” there at the main boat ramp on the west side of the reservoir and will be there from 1:00 p.m. to …

Some Field Work, Wanahoo Pike

DSCN7225

Admittedly I do not get out and do a whole lot of field work anymore, but once in awhile “the guys” need some help, and when they are desperate they give me a call.  A couple of weeks ago I got to slip out to Lake Wanahoo to help with the northern pike tagging again this spring. For those of you who may not be familiar with the pike tagging at Lake Wanahoo, I will not go into all the …

Ode to the Season Past

DSCN7169

My ice fishing season ended in literally a week this year; we were on 13+ inches of hard ice, and a week later it was not safe.  It was much too short.  My son and I were left with a feeling of unfulfillment–we needed just one more trip, just one more big fish.  I suppose you could say we have that feeling at the end of every ice season, but we felt it even more this year. I have not …

Some Quick Updates, Dec. 1, 2015

DSCN7013

Short, quick blog today.  I just want to mention a couple of updates on projects that are underway right now. . . . Conestoga Reservoir Our long-awaited Aquatic Habitat Rehabilitation project at Conestoga Reservoir near Denton finally got underway this fall.  Now this project is going to take some time, work will probably be ongoing over this entire next year, but water levels are low enough that progress is already being made this fall.  Now, I do not understand all …

Road Work at Lake Wanahoo

EF20140718_620

I suppose I may be the only one who is still fishing open water.  As I said before, yes I am crazy, crazy like a fox.  When I can walk on it, then my open-water fishing will be over for the year (and my ice-fishing will begin!).  So, no, I am not done fishing open water yet, will dry some more off before it freezes. I may be in the minority, but there still may be a few others that …

Update on Lake Wanahoo’s Fishery on WOWT 6 Outdoors

I’ll be giving you an update on the Lake Wanahoo fishery near Wahoo, NE on this week’s WOWT 6 News Outdoor Report. You’ll wanna tune in and find out how things are going there and get a status report on the sampling of the fishery and the fishing outlook for this spring and summer, I’m sure. Hint, hint … wink, wink … nod, nod … the northern pike in the lake are even bigger than  when these pics were taken! The …

Piking

Last weekend I was informed, sort of anonymously on the inter-web, that I was a fine, lazy state worker.  Ironically, that came after working my seventh weekend out of the ten since the first of the year.  I recalled that yesterday when I actually got out of the office to help with some field work.  I do not do that often anymore, but on occasion I get to be back on the water helping one of our field biologists.  The occasion yesterday was …

Got Another One!

Just a couple of weeks ago I told you about successfully completing my quest to catch a tagged flathead catfish from Branched Oak Reservoir (Finally Got One!).  Well, as the fall has progressed and waters have cooled, I have shifted my focus from warm-water species like flathead catfish to species that will continue to be more active, and easier to catch, in cooler water.  I have made several trips up to Lake Wanahoo the past few weeks and have consistently …

Wanahoo Eagle Extravaganza a success

About 150 peopled ventured out to the first ever Wanahoo Eagle Extravaganza on Saturday.  The event featured the lake’s nesting pair of Bald Eagles.   Activities were provided, spotting scopes were set up to view the eagles, Raptor Recovery Nebraska brought live raptors (a Barn Owl and a Broad-winged Hawk) for people to see up close and personal, and the Wahoo Chamber of Commerce provided refreshments.  Many of the event’s participants were young kids, which is good because that was …
