Drawdown will affect boating access at three SRAs

A planned drawdown of Lake Ogallala for infrastructure maintenance will affect boating access at three Nebraska state recreation areas this fall. Lake Ogallala, Sutherland Reservoir and Lake Maloney SRAs will have limited access. It will begin with the Sept. 26 lowering of Lake Ogallala as part of a scheduled maintenance project on the Keystone Diversion Dam by the Nebraska Public Power District. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) hosted its sixth annual Carp-O-Rama at Lake Maloney State Recreation Area (SRA) this month. The event was a huge success according to the smiles seen and laughter heard. LINCOLN, Neb. – The die-off of white bass May 26 at Lake Maloney was not the result of any infectious diseases, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The cause can be attributed to the fish being concentrated in a localized area of the lake, stress due to spawning and a brief period of poor water quality. Samples were collected and submitted to a fish health laboratory following the die-off. Results from tissue samples indicated several possible causes, but …

Fish kill reported at Lake Maloney

LINCOLN, Neb. – An estimated 1,000 to 3,000 fish have died in a fish kill that was reported May 26 at Lake Maloney. Those fish were primarily white bass and wipers. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission biologists suspect a disease caused the die-off. The white bass were in spawning condition, and the high temperatures likely added stress to the fish, which would have made them more susceptible to disease.
