Now What?

I know you get tired of my blogging about it, but as I look out the window today I feel compelled to say something about this again–ice safety.  I got a phone call from a guy this week; all he wanted to know was the best waters in his area to go ice-fishing.  The thought that the ice might not be safe had never even crossed his mind–we have had snow and cold again, and he was going ice-fishing.  I could …

Game and Parks Suggests Tips for Safety on Ice

LINCOLN – Stay safe on the ice this winter while enjoying a day of ice fishing. Follow these Nebraska Game and Parks Commission tips for safety on the ice: — There should be at least 4 inches of clear, solid ice before an angler ventures onto a frozen lake or pond. — Wear a life jacket. — Commercial or homemade ice picks should be worn around your neck in case you fall through and need something to grip the ice …

Ice Fishing Primer

Interested in getting into ice fishing?  Want to know what it takes to get started? We are hosting a “beginning ice fishing” workshop at the Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln this Thursday night, Dec. 11.  The Outdoor Education Center is located just north of Superior Street in north Lincoln, 44th and Superior. This will be a “classroom” workshop, so no, no hands-on ice-fishing this time.  We have some of those workshops coming later this winter, and we ain’t got enough ice …

“Safety First”

I have been blogging about Nebraska’s outdoors, mostly about fish and fishing, for several years now, long enough to know that certain seasonal topics are repeated year after year.  When we have ice, I am going to be blogging about ice fishing.  I love to ice-fish and you can count on me blogging about it.  That also means that every year I am going to blog about ice safety!  I hope folks do not think I am being some kind of …

Still On

I am fully aware that spring will some day come, and that day is getting closer all the time.  But until then, I am on the ice!  Last fall I transitioned from fishing open water to being on the ice within a couple of weeks.  I am betting I make the reverse transition this spring. I do not have a lot of pictures to show or reports to share, just a quick update on what I have been doing, a …

It Ain’t Over, Yet!

I have mentioned this before, but I want to again point out our cooperative effort with the Omaha World-Herald on their GoOutdoorsNE.com outdoor page. I want to mention that again because recently Mark Davis from the “World-Herald” contacted me about doing an ice-fishing story.  Now I have had several newspaper and TV folks on the ice to do ice fishing stories over the years.  I am afraid some of them have frozen while they were with me, but if they are …

Tragedy

If you are like me and my family, you are mesmerized by the Olympics.  Yep, we are at home watching the winter Olympics on TV pretty much every evening.  Sure, once every two years we take interest in sporting events that we know nothing about, nor care about, but the whole Olympic competition, whether it is summer or winter, is just riveting.  I love it.  When the winter Olympics roll around I am all for an event that celebrates snow …

Windy

Unless you literally live under a rock, you have noticed that we have had a lot of wind lately.  That is an understatement.  I am not going to say “it has never been this windy before” or “I never remember it being this windy” because I believe such statements are usually wrong.  It seems like anything that happened more than 5 years ago is considered ancient history anymore and does not count.  We all know that the Great Plains in …

The Ice Man Cometh. . . .

I am already hearing some reports of folks venturing onto Nebraska ice to drill some holes and catch some fish.  Looking ahead at the weather forecast for the next week or so, it looks like our ice-fishing season is upon us or soon will be!  With that I want to again blog about ice safety.  I LOVE to ice-fish and will be on the ice as soon as possible and stay on the ice as late as possible in the …

It Ain’t Over, ‘Til Its Over

A couple of weeks ago I figured my ice-fishing was done for this season.  But then our weather swung back to cold, again, and last week I had some business out west.  I debated whether to take the ice-fishing gear with me or the open-water gear.  I took both.  The first afternoon I planned to do some scouting, check out the conditions and see what I could do.  I was a little surprised when I pulled onto the Valentine National …
