Only the Cool Kids Do It!

MED24506

Those of us who ice-fish have always known it.  Others are just beginning to figure it out. . . . Only the “cool kids” ice fish! Don’t believe me?  This commercial has been running on TV lately: I know this, they do not come any “cooler” than Matthew McCounghey! And he’s ice-fishing! When I run into ole Matt on the ice sometime, we will have to share tips: I thought it looked like he could have used more bait on …

Tips for safe ice-fishing

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – Stay safe on the ice this winter while enjoying a day of ice-fishing. Follow these tips from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for safety on the ice: — The minimum ice thickness for supporting one person is at least 4 inches of clear, solid ice. — Drill holes or use an ice chisel or spud bar to check the ice conditions while working your way out to your fishing spot. — Wear a life jacket. …

Cats On Ice

DSCN4383

Do not know how long it will be until I get on the ice.  I am getting tired of waiting.  I am even watching cat videos to pass the time. Pretty sure this cat needs an auger! Maybe could use some creepers too! Hopefully soon we will have enough ice for me and my cat to go fishing!

Choose proper equipment for safe, comfortable ice-fishing

NGPC Latest News logo

LINCOLN, Neb. – Ice-fishing can be a great way to beat cabin fever and it can be one of the best times of the year to catch fish. However, to take advantage of ice-fishing opportunities, some gear is essential to make the experience safe, comfortable and productive. Never venture out onto the ice until it is certain that the ice is a safe thickness – that means 4 inches of new, clear ice. Daryl Bauer, fisheries outreach program manager for …

Ice Time

P2210004

Starting to hear a few reports of folks venturing onto the ice in parts of Nebraska.  As I warned a few weeks ago, now it is time for my obligatory blog about ice safety. I pretty much will never tell you that the ice is safe, “no problem, go fish”.  Sure, there are times in the middle of the winter when we have plenty of ice, but even then I am not going to tell you it is safe.  You …

How Long?

SkimIceCrop

I will fish open water as late into the fall as possible.  Pretty sure I ain’t done yet.  But, with the relatively cold fall we have had, I cannot help but wonder, how long until we have ice?  How long until I can ice-fish? Found a local reservoir that was 75% covered with a skim of ice last week! Same reservoir was 100% open water this past weekend. So, it is going to be awhile yet. I found this posted …

Obviously an Ice-Fisherman!

IMG_0710

My thoughts are turning more and more towards ice-fishing, and if your thoughts are the same, you will love this. . . . I found this TV news report on the interwebs. . . . How did that guy end up in Oklahoma?  OKLAHOMA????  Of all places!  I would tell you he has to have been from someplace north of Oklahoma originally, but he has the Oklahoma accent!  At the least, he needed to travel “up nort” during the ice-fishing …

Late Ice, Early Open

March2019BigLargemouth

When doing seminars and workshops about Nebraska fishing I often note that we have no closed season for fishing in the state, and that I will spend at least some time fishing every month of the year.  An ideal autumn is one where I go from late fall, open-water fishing to first ice, ice-fishing in just a couple of weeks.  Likewise, I ride late ice as long as I can, as long as it is safe, and ideally transition to …

Love Your Auger!

Jiffy

With each passing day lately I am hearing more and more folks depressed about the winter, the snow, the cold, etc. I laugh. You cannot do anything about the weather.  If life gives you ice, you might as well go ice-fishing!  Frankly, I am loving this and hope it lasts!  If I quit ice-fishing the day before the spring shotgun turkey season opens, that would be perfect! My nephew called my attention to something that was circulating on the interwebs …

I’m Not Kidding This Time, Now It Really Is Mid-Winter

P2130022

A few weeks ago I blogged about my adventures on the ice and according to the calendar I titled it a “mid-winter ice report”.  Well, you all know what the weather has been like since then, and even though the calendar says it is the end of February, all the snow and slush on the ice tells me we now are in mid-winter. Certainly our weather and ice conditions have been what we usually see in mid-winter, but I still …
